Legal & Illegal US immigrants, Refugees from Central America, US Immigration, Writer’s block, Writers' Critique Group, Year 2018
Year 2018 was filled with disappointments, self-doubt, and loss of direction. After completing my second novel, The Twisted Circle, in September 2017, I failed to grab the attention of literary agents or publishers.
“Not quite the right fit for us,” respondents said.
“You’re not good enough,” my inner critic said.
Drowning in self-doubt, I clung to the recognition that my yet-to-be-published first novel, Under the Tamarind Tree, had received when shortlisted for the 2014 Dundee International Book Prize.
Each attempt to get started on my third novel, to be set in Brazil, fizzled out. The Top Boss in the White House held my afflicted heart in his grip. My mind became a barren landscape of shifting sand dunes. In September, I abandoned my writing project.
Where do I go from here? The answer still evades me.
Our president persists in shaking up the sandbox of our collective lives. He does not welcome brown-skinned immigrants like me into the United States. After ridiculing illegal immigrants and refugees from what he calls “shithole countries,” he turned his disdain towards legal immigrants who receive federal public benefits, including Obama Care. Although I was required by law to sign up for health insurance under The Affordable Care Act (ACA), I have become an undesirable immigrant.
When our president attacked California’s sanctuary cities and depicted immigrants as a violent threat, I became more vulnerable in public places. Would ICE agents one day come knocking at the door of our apartment? Meanwhile, following a government shutdown still in effect, thousands of American federal workers have passed this holiday season without a paycheck. Our president cares not who must suffer so that he could get his “beautiful wall” to keep out refugees fleeing poverty and violence in Central America.
I am the only non-white and immigrant member of our six-member writers’ critique group. Since May 2015, we have been meeting once a month over lunch at a local restaurant. My writing friends treat me with respect and value my contributions to the critique process. I treasure our friendship. I know that they will support whatever new direction my writing takes in the New Year.

Happy New Year to you too, and all the best for 2019. I honestly thought that Trump would calm down after three or four months in office but no sign so far. Perhaps I should write to him with my brilliant idea. If you don’t want your own country full of immigrants from XXXXX, then make XXXXX a decent place that they’ll want to live in.

That is indeed a BRILLIANT thought, and it would be cheaper (and safer for all) than militarizing the planet.

John, we in the USA also thought that he would learn to at least act presidential. But it’s just not in him.
Love your brilliant idea. It’s execution would require the dismantling of our global, capitalist, economic system. And, as I see it, the controllers/drivers of the system are incapable of changing their self-destructive course.

I echo Derrick Knight’s words. Writing for publication in a world crowded with words is doubtless more punishing than ever. For now, your voice here makes a difference, in part because of POTUS. All the best, Rosaliene.

Thanks, Jerry ❤ The business of publishing is indeed frustrating. I plan to publish my first novel in the New Year. The revised manuscript is now with my copy-editor/proofreader.

Dear heart, I feel your pain (which may sound like a cliché, but if we’re not all in this together, what are we doing here?). The man in the White House is a cancer on our country; life is hard enough (at least, for those not as privileged as he is) without his “It’s all about me” tearing us apart.
Hang in there, and hopefully 2019 will see the end of the Trump presidency. You and I and all of us deserve better.

Dear Rosaliene, I had no idea how much you suffered and I am most sorry to hear it – though grateful too that you shared with us. I refuse to listen to most of the inhumanity that emanates from your white house, but still some outrages filter through. It seems to me that these days, in your adopted country, cruelty and insanity and the lust for power has removed any chance of a quality of life for anyone with a social conscience, no matter what their skin colour, religious affiliation or social status might be. And it seems there might just be more people without social consciences than there are with…….. Having said that I also know for sure that how we choose to live out lives, treat our fellow humans and ourselves and hold our future outcomes in our hearts changes our world for the better. Please don’t despair. Investigate self publishing, hunt out alternatives – so many have with a great deal of success. Publish chapters and teasers on your blog. Step away from the mighty publishing houses and try the Indie life………..
I send you my wishes that 2019 be a year of hope and promise and change and that success comes your way again and peace is restored in your soul. Pauline

Yes, I've been investigating the self-publishing market and plan to pursue that route in the New Year, beginning with my first novel, Under the Tamarind Tree.

You’re a beautiful person so you will achieve success. Who knows what form that success will come in, but it will come. At the very least you’ve made a difference and helped some people keep their sanity. That is far from being a meaningless cliché. These are extremely trying times. 😎

Awww thanks so much for including me in this important list Rosaliene! I also empathize with your “not a good fit” letter. It’s difficult not taking those personally, but you’re right. It means exactly what it says and has nothing to do with your writing or story. Best of luck this year. I hope Washington is eventually shaken up for the better.

Kathy, you’ve been inspirational in getting your work out through self-publishing. Unfortunately, publishers are looking for best sellers. To stay in business, small presses are forced to publish what they believe will reap good returns.
Washington has been a mess for some years now. I think that the current administration has been a wake-up call for our disengaged citizenry.

I agree, especially about “our disengaged citizenry.” I think we’ve all learned how much we knew/didn’t know/need to know to participate in a so-called democracy.

Dear Rosaliene, please keep writing. Your work matters because it offers such a crucial and powerful perspective about both injustice and resilience. I am deeply honored to be included in your list because you have continued to inspire me and teach me about so many different topics. I see you as a wise sister in spirit.
I also apologize for being so unaware of how directly affected you have been as a result of the hateful, racist, xenophobic policies of the current administration. I promise to stand with you in whatever ways I can. Sending you hugs, gratitude, and my best wishes, dear friend. ❤

Carol, my heartfelt thanks for your encouraging words. I also consider you a kindred spirit. I know that you stand with me and other immigrants, legal and illegal, facing the zero-tolerance, immigration policies of our current administration. Oppressed peoples of all colors suffer the same indignities.
May your work among the Ojibwe community bear fruit in bountiful for years to come.

Happy New Year! I had no idea of your background until I read it in this post. I’m so sorry that you’ve dealt with all this political stuff, vitriol, or whatever it is called. I suck at politics and history, but I want to learn and not suck at it, so that I can support more people like you to feel safe and welcomed and like “family” in our country. As a veteran of the Department of Defense, I swore to defend the Constitution, but I cannot imagine the Constitution would allow for such hate that we’ve seen in the past year. This isn’t what I signed up for in the past, and it certainly doesn’t reflect who I am as a veteran today. I think the world would be more peaceful if it were one big country called Earth, and if each land mass were like states, where we could freely come and go, visit and make ourselves a home. The sensationalism and bigotry make it all too easy for people to generalize, as opposed to seeing the good in most people, regardless of their origin, skin color, race, ethnicity, birthplace, etc. I think fear drives most of this sensationalism and bigotry, and fear begets fear; if they fear, they react by making people afraid. It’s not right. I hope this new year brings more peace, prosperity, hope, promise, purpose, and publishing for you!

Your novel did not fail. That just wasn’t the way. I queried agents and traditional publishers for a while and could have continued that route, but decided I didn’t want to wait any longer. That baby wanted to be born. I admire your courage and perseverance in writing two novels. Plenty of people think about writing a book. Fewer start, and even fewer finish. It also takes courage to look the US political situation squarely in the face and voice your truth when people like me can only manage small doses of mainstream news. Please take good care of yourself, Rosaliene. Rest when you need to. The world needs you. We need your voice – here and in your novels. I wish and pray for you to have many moments of peace and joy in this new year.

Rosaliene,
I’ve hesitated to respond to this post, because you sounded so sad. You did inspire me to make a new year’s resolution, to wit: to work on my long unfinished novel an hour a day in 2019. I’ve let it lapse (again), bu it’s upbeat and “fun” and I think something the world needs right now. It seems there’s a general feeling that humanity is doomed and determined to take the whole planet with it. Yet, I believe there are unrealized potentials and unexplored abilities in our make-up. May you discover yours in 2019.

Hi Rosaliene,
As others have said, I too wish you a vastly improved life experience in 2019! My hope is that compassion and common sense will rule and bring an end to this cycle of right-wing negativity the world is currently experiencing. I see the swearing in of so many new female members of the US Congress as a very positive step in the right direction!

Happy new year! Sorry you have to go through that feeling like an unwelcome immigrant because of trumps insanity. Honestly feel like I’m living in a dystopian novel when I tune into what he’s up to. I hope you find clarity and insight with your writing projects this year. And if not that’s okay to. It will come when it’s meant to at the right time. Would you consider self publishing and promotion? Good luck.

Hi Rosaliene, I am guessing you have not published either of your novels, which sound fascinating. Have you considered self-publishing? It can be expensive and the marketing is worse but at least you get it out there so an agent might pick it up.
