Let’s have no illusions. We are in rough seas. A winter of global discontent is on the horizon. A cost-of-living crisis is raging. Trust is crumbling. Our planet is burning. People are hurting – with the most vulnerable suffering the most. The United Nations Charter and the ideals it represents are in jeopardy….”
We are gridlocked in colossal global dysfunction. The international community is not ready or willing to tackle the big dramatic challenges of our age. These crises threaten the very future of humanity and the fate of our planet….”
But the reality is that we live in a world where the logic of cooperation and dialogue is the only path forward. No power or group alone can call the shots. No major global challenge can be solved by a coalition of the willing. We need a coalition of the world.”
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, address at the opening of the general debate of the UN General Assembly’s 77th session, New York, USA, September 20, 2022
I highly recommend that you take the time to listen to Pakistan Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s address to the General Debate of the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, September 23, 2022. What a “monsoon on steroids” has unleashed on the people of Pakistan will not stay in Pakistan.
End is neigh !
Really !
UN has passed its sell by date
Not fit for purpose !
Needs a reformation

Kamtan, based on their track record of resolving our global challenges, the UN is, indeed, in need of reformation.

The UN Security Council is nothing but a “farce” ! Blair and Bush proved that by invading/removing both Sadam and Gadaffi !
Will any western leader try same with rasPutin ? Doubt it !
Change will come in Russia but from within……eventually !
A week is a looong time in politricks !
Ask the maverick Bojo aka Boris J.
Change will come but at wat price ?…..valuable change way forward
Hopefully for better !

A heartfelt and strong message. The UN surely has to step up its game here and in Ukraine.

It is, indeed, frightening, Derrick. As Guterres observes, we need more than a “coalition of the willing,” especially when “the willing” are those nations suffering the most from the climate emergency who don’t have the power nor financial means to take action.

I wouldn’t be quite as worried if anybody important seemed bothered, the USA, China, India, Russia, the largest polluters. But they don’t. So long as they stay rich and famous, the people at the top and the wealthy aren’t bothered about the fate of ordinary people in a far off land.

Exactly, John!!! On the other hand, don’t forget that Pakistan is a nuclear-armed country that shares borders with India and China.

I knew that! And as somebody on TV pointed out recently, a country created solely because of religion, as is Bangla Desh too. With Israel, that’s three, but surely there are more?

John, there may be more, but none come to mind.

Thank you for sharing!!.. The negatives make the headlines in today’s world, showing a desperate people hopelessly trying to deny change, not wishing to face reality…but there are many who do not make the news that are using today’s technology, working together, to help make this world a better place.. it will not happen overnight and there may be some pain to go with it, but it will happen, if not for us, the future.. 🙂
Hope all is well in your part of the universe and until we meet again..
May the sun shine all day long
Everything go right, nothing go wrong
May those you love bring love back to you
And may all the wishes you wish come true

Hi. Do you know if Mr. Guterres mentioned the fact that Russia attacked Ukraine? If he didn’t, he purposely avoided the issue.

Neil, he most surely did. Within the 8:18 minute mark of his presentation address, the Secretary-General noted that the world is squarely focused on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, “which has unleashed widespread destruction with massive violations of human rights and international humanitarian law… We are seeing the threat of dangerous divisions between West and South. The risks to global peace and security are immense….” You can listen to his address at the UN Web TV live recording at https://news.un.org/en/story/2022/09/1127071

There are still too many people who think the climate crisis is a made up hoax, they are financially supported by big oil who make over a Billion dollars profit DAILY.

Tamara, it’s a reality that I’m grappling with within my own family. For some among us, denial saves one from dealing with the anxiety and uncertainty of reality. Here in our beautiful state of California, we are already dealing with real-life consequences of a warming climate: heatwaves, drought, and extreme wildfires.

It’s very difficult for people to accept if they don’t see the big picture around d the world. Big oil is paying key people off, namely some politicians and other influential leaders to speak out against the science and instead tell people that what we’re seeing is just a normal cycle in earth’s weather patterns. For people who have difficulty in accepting the scariness of what’s happening, it’s easier to believe them.
All we can control is our own behavior and thoughts, we have no power over others.
These stories have been circulating since the 70’s, so like the frog in the pot of water with the heat gradually being increased, our collective consciousness adapts. Those of us old enough to remember what things were like before are discounted as being hippie crackpots. Environmentalists have been warning us for decades, so now it’s become an annoyance for people to listen to since they’re not noticing the changes.
Big oil will continue to rape the planet, because there’s Billions of dollars to be made and enjoyed weekly.
There are people working to change things On a grass roots level. Bioneers.org is a non-profit which hosts a huge conference annually in California to gather leaders and teachers together to educate people about how they can help change their communities. I once worked for one of the co-founders in Santa Fe, and know of the work they do. They work under the radar to teach people.

Tamara, thanks for sharing your deep concern. It’s the grass roots initiatives worldwide that give me hope that all will not be lost.

They’re giving me hope too, for as long as there is still a lot of money to be made, I’m not confident that Big Business will do much, even though they have the ability to completely turn things around. As small initiatives invent and build clean alternatives, they may be able to sell their ideas to big business to use. Fingers crossed.

Yes, we need badly the coalition, unity and compassion of the world. The Earth is being destroyed. It is sick and dying because of people. If the world don’t save it, the world and all in it will eventually perish. But before that, great suffering. People around the world needs to wake up, the pandemic is nothing compared to what’s inevitable. Thank you for the inspiration post.

Island Traveler, thanks for adding your voice to this issue. The people of Pakistan and all people now on the front-lines of our climate emergency can attest to that great suffering that awaits us all.

It’s so sad! Just like in Pakistan, many countries are faced with man-made problems. Some countries enrich themselves at the expense of others!

You’re welcome, Rebecca. What the people of Pakistan is facing now is a thousand-and-one times more devastating than that of the August 2005 Hurricane Katrina in the USA.

I believe the exponential population growth has a lot to do with the way people interact! As a result, everyone is vying for the resources we all need. Desperation creates self-preservation fears. The future of all of us is very uncertain.

I agree, Dwight, but population control remains a controversial issue. We humans appear to have a preference for wars, famine, and natural disasters as the means for controlling our exponential population growth.

I agree that “… the logic of cooperation and dialogue is the only path forward” if we humans are to survive with any kind of quality of life. I hope we learn to do this with respect for the earth and each other.
