5.0 out of 5 Stars: A young nun’s journey through the minefields of politics, poverty, and the Roman Catholic Church
The Twisted Circle is rich and vivid with the descriptions of people, places, geography, and unfortunately the politics of Rosaliene Bacchus’ native Guyana during the tumultuous Seventies and Eighties. Told from the vantage point of a young nun and schoolteacher, Sister Barbara, serving in a rural, poverty-stricken area, this novel also renders the very fabric of the Roman Catholic Church and exposes behind the scenes interpersonal relationships which at times are as dirty and vicious as the period of political turmoil. Rosaliene’s characters are as well-fleshed out as her descriptions. I highly recommend this novel.

Congratulations!! I should think that it must mean a lot to have the approval of a fellow author.

Thanks very much, John! It does, indeed, mean a lot to have fellow author Don Miller appreciate my work. He has his own unique humorous style of writing about life that I find engaging.

I can well appreciate where you’re coming from in writing this novel. My wife is an ex-nun. Nothing that happens “behind the scenes” in the Roman Catholic Church surprises us. Best wishes for the success of this “inside job” novel.

Being a slow reader, I’m savoring getting to know the “well-fleshed out” characters and their thoughts. Twisted Circle is definitely my preference of the books I’m juggling right now. This review nudges me along and makes me think of you as speaking truth about power.

JoAnna, I sure don’t see the Catholic Church or the Christian churches in general promoting such a book. I also question basic Christian teachings on obedience and forgiveness.

There are some rebellious “progressive Christians” I’ve encountered in a FB group that might appreciate your book. Some of them are pretty outside the boxes but still consider themselves Christians. I have a hard time with “obedience,” and forgiveness is often a complicated process for me. I’ve read that forgiveness doesn’t excuse the act that is forgiven. Still not entirely sure how that works.

JoAnna, unfortunately, I don’t have any connections with “progressive Christians.” I published a book release on ReligionNews.com but have no idea of its impact.
Based on my experience, I’ve found that the church’s teaching on forgiving our abusers leads to continued abuse. I forgave the father of my sons, thereby letting go of the anger and hate that I was carrying for several years after he had abandoned us in Brazil. In so doing, I remained vulnerable to his verbal jabs and stabs. Lessons learned: forgive, never forget, and keep one’s distance.
