COVID-19 pandemic, Earth’s apex predator, How coronavirus will change our world, Planetary societal disruption, Planetary Web of Life, Social isolation
We are living in a time of great societal disruption. Despite all our advanced technology, we have been kicked off our pedestal by a mere virus. The COVID-19 doesn’t adhere to humanity’s border controls nor our military might. Its rampant spread across human populations is yet another reminder of the consequences of the imbalance our species have exerted on our planetary interconnected Web of Life.
As we grapple with social isolation, anxiety about paying our bills, and uncertainty about our future, now is the time to take stock of how we got here and where we are headed. If we wish to survive as a species, we humans must drastically change the way we live.
It’s no coincidence that our planetary societal disruption is occurring at a time of climatic and ecological crises. They are all connected. What’s more, these crises all have a common denominator—homo sapiens, Earth’s apex predator. The COVID-19 pandemic is just a taste of what lies ahead for humanity with the ongoing unraveling of the Web of Life.
Now is the time to appreciate our collective contribution and responsibility in providing and caring for each other.
Now is the time to determine what is truly essential for our well-being.
Now is the time to question our values and priorities.
Now is the time to examine our economic theories and beliefs built on individual acquisition and ownership of Earth’s gifts to all in the Web of Life.
Now is the time to determine what kind of future we want for ourselves, our children, our grandchildren, and future generations.
I recommend for your consideration the predictions of 34 big thinkers presented in the article, “Coronavirus Will Change the World Permanently. Here’s How,” published by Politico Magazine on March 19, 2020. The areas covered include community, tech, health/science, government, elections, the global economy, and lifestyle.
Fear not the duality of life. New beginnings come with letting go of what we hold today as precious for our well-being.
Wow – right on Rosaliene. I glanced over the headers of the Politico article you linked to and I sure hope and pray for these things come to pass. I have bookmarked it and will delve into it much more deeply in the evening. Thanks so much and may you stay well.

You’re welcome, Rebecca 🙂 Yes, it’s quite a meaty article, but filled with other ways of looking at our current crisis and which direction we want to take when our lives return to a new normal.

Yes, I skimmed it and was impressed how many subjects it covered, all with much forethought.

Thanks, Dr. Stein. Now is not the time for us to fritter away our days at home on empty pleasures and distractions. To be sure, the minority elite that control our world are busy planning their next move to take full advantage of the fallout ahead.

Honestly, I am very worried about the support our federal government is getting right now and its autocratic proclivities. I pray the changes we see will be in the other direction. Stay safe Rosaliene…

I share your concern, Kim. We the people have to be vigilant. Just as the finance industry grew larger after the 2008-2009 global financial/economic collapse, other groups of transnational corporations may now well be gearing up to consolidate greater market space as small- and medium-sized businesses collapse.

I agree wholeheartedly Rosaliene. We are now getting a taste of what the future holds. Nature strikes back.

Yes, we humans have created an unsustainable imbalance in Earth’s ecosystems which is best evidenced by climate change. A pandemic like COVID-19 was not only inevitable, it was also expected by the scientific community and government national security agencies such a U.S. Defense Department report from 2014 (see: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2014/10/13/climate-change-threatens-national-security-pentagon-says/ ). In fact, overpopulation, globalization, hyper-capitalism, and wealth inequality, all work in conjunction to create the perfect environment for new infectious diseases.
And, yes, the current crisis gives us an opportunity to change. What changes actually happen, and whether it is positive or negative, is difficult to predict. Judging by human history, however, I can’t say I’m optimistic.
The article you linked to is intriguing. Some of the speculation seemed reasonable, some not so much. Peter Coleman’s thoughts on the possible end of cultural polarization is at least premature, in my opinion. There needs to be a longer term social mechanism for that to transpire than just a 1-2 year pandemic. After that, whatever cooperation we’ve managed now would quickly fade away. Also, Tom Nichols’ idea of a return to “faith” (i.e. trust) in professional expertise is similarly sanguine. Without a restoration of our education systems, I see anti-intellectualism, anti-science, and anti-government sentiments increasing in proportion to rising societal stresses which result from climate change. Eric Klinenberg’s view of free markets and extreme individualism falling out of favor with the public seems more realistic to me because there’s evidence that it’s already happening. Unfortunately, that could be bad too if the movement descends into authoritarianism.

Robert, thanks for reading the recommended article and sharing your thoughts on some of the predictions offered therein. I share your observation that without restoring our education systems, “anti-intellectualism, anti-science, and anti-government sentiments [would increase] in proportion to rising societal stresses which result from climate change.” We already see this in action. Interestingly, our schools were the first to close with the unfolding of our health crisis, even though health experts said that our children (unless they have an underlying health risk) would be least affected by COVID-19.
Our future is not fixed in stone. There is something nefarious afoot. We need to be vigilant.

Excellent post and article Rosaliene. We have met that which is larger than ourselves. With no where to go we will find ourselves standing in the mystical winds of chance embracing the whims of random occurrences.

Now is the time to banish biological and nuclear weapons from the face of the Earth, for the simple reason continued covert bio-warfare such as humanity is experiencing now in the form of COVID-19 could escalate to even more destructive nuclear war…

Personally I think “will escalate” would be more accurate than “would escalate” and we’re in full “escalating” mode at the present time!

Great article, Rosaliene. With the rapid rise of mutual aid groups across the US, there is surely a strong potential to build a new society from the ground up.

Thank you for sharing!.. whatever the issue, change is the law of life and how one deals with it will determine what one will come to be… this virus issue (like 911, the Great Recession, etc) will change the lives of many in some form.. hopefully wisdom and patience will prevail, instead of haste and lack of forethought, and the future will be better, not worse… 🙂

You’ve done an excellent job of getting to the key issues. “Despite all our advanced technology, we have been kicked off our pedestal by a mere virus.” The headings in the article you linked to gives me some hope if we will learn the lessons – that health care, cooperation, and objective science must be our priorities.

Thanks, JoAnna. If we want to rise up out of this darkness into the light, we’ve got lots of serious thinking to do about where we should be for the continued survival of our species. America’s first Native American poet laureate Joy Harjo addresses this in my featured poem for April 2020. (See my blogpost dated 04/05/2020.)

I have not had a chance to read your link yet but I do feel this has gifts for us.. The earth is asking us to slow down and stop our rampant heady ascent.. that is how I see it. I am looking forward to reading the link you shared.
