Here is what we know now: the United States and Russia each have an actual Doomsday Machine… These two systems still risk doomsday: both are still on hair-trigger alert that makes their joint existence unstable. They are susceptible to being triggered on a false alarm, a terrorist action, unauthorized launch, or a desperate decision to escalate. They would kill billions of humans, perhaps ending complex life on earth.

Does any nation on earth have a right to possess such a capability? A right to threaten—by its simple possession of that capability—the continued existence of all other nations and their populations, their cities, and civilization as a whole?
Thought for Today: Dismantling the Doomsday Machine

I’m so relieved that we have as the proud possessors of a doomsday machine the two nations best equipped to look after them very, very carefully. One nation which seems to struggle even to count the votes in their presidential elections accurately and the other which keeps counting the votes in elections years apart but which always gets exactly the same answer.
And please don’t mention either Three Mile Island or Chernobyl.

I agree, John, the shady records of the two nations involved could very well lead to a disastrous outcome for billions of people.

My experience with we poor humans is that if a thing is possible at least one person will do it. If man had the ability to put a bolt through his neck and live unimpaired, some poor soul would do it. Here is a quote that might be applicable:
“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”
― H.L. Mencken, On Politics: A Carnival of Buncombe, published in 1956.
In light of present-day events, Mencken should have apologized to the “morons.” Reality has outpaced imagination.

Exactly ! Yep.
Dreams are but a figment of our imagination !
We live the dream.

Dr. Stein, it’s so true when you say: “My experience with we poor humans is that if a thing is possible at least one person will do it.” Some individuals have even lost their lives in their attempts to achieve what was previously deemed as impossible. In our current case, the life blood of a nation is at risk.

Accidents can happen…and not even involving the doomsday machines.
We got very lucky on this one.

Thanks for sharing the link, Mary. I agree that accidents can happen. When they do, I’m sure that the Pentagon will do their utmost to cover it up and keep it Top Secret.

Thank you for sharing!!.. nuclear weapons are just one of many ways that could change life on earth as we know it with which mankind has input… the threat will exist as long as closed minded ideologies use the weapon of “fear” and are fueled by greed… 🙂

Dutch, moving beyond our fear of the other, as Einstein noted, will require another way of thinking and being.

Incredible, isn’t it? Fear is man’s most effective weapon in controlling the masses of humanity.

There are already so many ways the world might end. You would think we would avoid creating any more! Because I definitely don’t want anyone’s finger on that button, not even my own.

It’s a wonder it hasn’t happened yet. What has kept it from happening? Maybe those forces, whatever they are, will continue to protect us until we can evolve beyond fear, greed, and hate. I’m not saying it’s likely, but still possible – either way. My friend has a doomsday bucket containing survival supplies. I have thought about getting one in case I have to head for the hills, but I would hope to never use it.

Wow survival supplies !
It is 2020 not 1920.
Question
Will you want to survive after a nuke ?
If big “IF” happens as I live near an international
airport hopefully it suffers a direct hit !
Fortunately no nuclear reactor in my hood.
A reactor accident is more a threat than a
military accident.
Get real our world has moved on ….armageddon is not imminent but not impossible.

JoAnna, I believe it hasn’t happened yet because calmer minds have prevailed. There would be no winners in a nuclear war.

If you accept the premise that the government does not care about the people they serve as I tend to do these days, then calmer minds to fend off such a disaster do not even matter. The China virus outbreak now might thus offer a lesson that its government can calmly hide the extent of this disease from the public

You make an excellent point, James. Our government, like that of China, could likely hide the truth from us, thereby allowing the disease to become widespread.
This latest Corona Virus must be very devastating for the Chinese government to take such drastic measures of limiting the movements of its population. Or, as Sha’Tara suggests in her comments to my post “The Choices We Make,” there may be other higher stakes at play here.
