Mass shootings in America, Thanksgiving Day 2022, Violence in America

Abstract Painting by Dibs on Pexels

Heavy is my heart this Thanksgiving for families grieving the loss of a loved one

targeted in yet another mass shooting

Just this month through November 26, across these disunited states of America

thirty-seven mass shootings, forty-eight people killed, fifty-two injured

Total figures for 2022 alone: 613 mass shootings, 642 deaths, more than 2,500 people injured

At war with ourselves

The next family hit could be mine or yours

No public space is safe or sacred

When will we say ENOUGH?

When will we break free?

Trapped in a loop woven with false narratives

These fears and frustrations [President Trump’s failure to build a wall], heightened by U.S. Census Bureau projections that white people will no longer be a majority by 2044, helped propel hate to a new high last year. The total number of hate groups rose to 1,020 in 2018, up about 7 percent from 2017. White nationalist groups alone surged by nearly 50 percent last year, growing from 100 chapters in 2017 to 148 in 2018. But at the same time, Trump has energized black nationalist hate groups — typically antisemitic and anti-LGBT organizations — with an increase to 264 from 233 in 2017. Overall, though, the great majority of hate groups are those that despise racial, ethnic or religious minorities and they, unlike black nationalist groups, have a firm foothold in the mainstream.

The top three states with the highest number of hate groups are California (83), Florida (75), and Texas (73).

FILE - In this Oct. 16, 2015 file photo, the charred remains of the Doctors Without Borders hospital is seen after it was hit by a U.S. airstrike in Kunduz, Afghanistan. The Army Green Berets who called in the deadly strike on the Doctors without Borders trauma center in Afghanistan were aware it was a functioning hospital but believed it was under Taliban control, raising questions about whether the air strike violated international law.. At home and abroad, Americans are on a killing spree. I struggle to understand what’s driving our propensity to violence. As a nation, we also seem to have become numb to this violence.

We do little to nothing to address the scourge of young, white, male loners who go on killing sprees in our schools, colleges, cinemas, and other public places. Our guns, it seems, are more sacred than the lives of our children.

Then there are cases of policemen who go rogue. What’s more, they show a preference for African American targets. Anything – even daring to look at them – is an excuse for killing. Peaceful demonstrators against such injustices must face a police force armed for war. Continue reading →
