Attack from Within: How Disinformation is Sabotaging America by Barbara McQuade (USA 2025), Authoritarian Playbook, Disinformation in America

Disinformation is the deliberate use of lies to manipulate people, whether to extract profit or to advance a political agenda. Its unwitting accomplice, misinformation, is spread by unknowing dupes who repeat lies they believe to be true. In America today, both forms of falsehood are distorting our perception of reality. In a democracy, the people need a shared set of facts as a basis to debate and make decisions that advance and secure their collective interests. Differences of opinion, and even propaganda, have always existed in the United States, but now, enemies of democracy are using disinformation to attack our sovereign right to truthful information, intellectual integrity, and the exercise of the will of the people.
[…]
Throughout history, authoritarians have used disinformation to seize power from the people. As a former national security prosecutor, I see self-serving forces sabotaging our country. Manipulators are using disinformation to poison discourse and stoke divisions in society…. Our country’s constantly changing demographics naturally bring differences of opinion, but the bitter divides are not the inevitable result of a pluralistic society with diverse ethnic, racial, religious, and social groups. They are the product of a deliberate attack through disinformation. Lies are becoming increasingly normalized, and our democracy is in peril. The conversation I propose is not a debate about Democratic and Republican politics. It is about the essential need for truth in self-governance.

Isn’t it the duty of all of us to proceed against this kind of strategy,Rosaliene? Many thanks for your information.

I agree, Martina, but the development and proliferation of AI on our social media networks have made it difficult to separate truth from fake.

Such an important book, Rosaliene; glad you spotlighted it. Disinformation does indeed have a horrendous effect on democracy. The Trump regime is a master at it. 😦

It is, indeed, an important book, Dave. McQuade also reveals that it’s not only local actors at work, but also foreign adversaries, seeking to undermine our democracy.

It is said that 28% of the population will believe what they are told and that a further 20% can be convinced to follow them. Critical thinking requires effort that many do not want to put in or have the time to consider. This favours the dis-informants. What has been happening since 2014 is a slow insidious stream of alternative facts, much more easily spread on social media. Maybe it is the adults that need to be banned from social media, not the children. Thanks for sharing Rosaliene and have a great day. Allan

So true, Allan. Many of us have so many other issues to deal with that disinformation is not on their list of priorities. McQuade writes about our fallible human nature in her chapter “Hearts are Bigger than Minds: Why Disinformation Works.”

Thank you for giving us a glimpse of McQuade’s book, Rosaliene. She has been in the fight from the beginning, a brave and brilliant woman. The disinformation stands to become more convincing as conveyors of misinformation such as videos convincingly distort events and faces. It is our responsibility to stay informed and to inform others of the truth.

My pleasure in sharing, Dr. Stein. The AI deep fake videos are getting better by the day, not only capturing facial images but also vocal patterns. These days, I verify the authenticity of the information by going to the source, wherever possible.

Disinformation is killing discourse between the two sides. There’s a few bad players, some come from the USA, and are doing whatever they can to discredit the other side. Other bad players are from other nations keen on rupturing the country from within. Unfortunately, the people believing the lies they read don’t stop for a second to consider how they’re being manipulated into becoming hateful to their neighbors.

You’re spot on, Tamara. In Chapter 3, McQuade discusses the following reasons why we fall for disinformation: fear of a changing world, our fallible human nature, stubbornness, confirmation bias, cognitive dissonance, the backfire effect, and conformity bias and tribe signaling.

It has been proven time and again that facts don’t sway people’s opinions. It has to be something that affects them personally for them to assess their life choices.

Tamara, the downside of this human character trait, when applied to national and global issues, is that we the people would most likely miss the tipping point for turning around the situation.

Unfortunately many will and only open their eyes when they are in the middle of it. Thankfully many already see.

Scary, indeed, Derrick. In her chapter “The New Engines of Disinformation: The Danger of Emerging Technology,” McQuade mentions the British firm Cambridge Analytica that obtained user data from Facebook without their permission. They not only used this information to manipulate American voters in the 2015 presidential elections, but were also involved with the 2016 Brexit campaign.

Thank you for bringing up this topic as well as the book. After (recently) reading from authors like Chris Hedges, Michael Parenti, Robert Fisk, Howard Zinn as well as tuning into independent media outlets, I’ve come to realize just how twisted Western thinking really is and how hard it is to find other perspectives. I know we aren’t completely lost because we still have access to some truth but yeah, I’m pretty sure we’re the most propagandized country in the world.

Mara, kudos to you for doing what you can to stay informed within the alternate reality we now live in. I also now depend entirely on independent media outlets for staying informed.

We need the Holy Spirit to discern truth from lies. I’m reminded of Pilate’s comment, as a political figure, ‘What is Truth?’

Disinformation will turn a satisfied, productive person into a person who feels taken advantage of.
Take stock of what you appreciate about your community as an antidote to being swayed by disinformation.

That’s for sure, JoAnna, even from the Boss-man. McQuade presents substantial solutions in Chapter 9. These include (1) Amend Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 that gives internet service providers immunity from legal liability; (2) Prohibit anonymous users and bots; (3) Regulate algorithms; (4) Strengthen local journalism; and many more. It’s worth reading.

Excellent points Rosaliene! The sound bites of repeated broadcasts of disinformation is despicable! It’s unnerving how so many are fine being wrapped up in trying to legitimate lies like we’ve never before seen! Simply nauseating! 🤢

This book raises questions many of us are pondering. I’ve asked multiple people with opposing political ideals why they believe as they do. They respond with disinformation. If I question their source, ask if they tune into multiple sources of information rather than just one, or give alternative information, they abruptly end the conversation rather than discuss as we used to do. Thank you for another good book, Rosaliene.

My pleasure in sharing, Mary. It’s difficult when we can’t have meaningful engagement with those who share opposing political ideals. After facing similar experiences with my own Republican sons and neighbors, I connect with them on what we share in common. Of all the reasons that McQuade present for why we fall victim to disinformation (listed in my comment to Tamara Kulish), I believe that “fear of a changing world” plays a vital role.

Rosaliene, Thank you for this timely post with its excellent quotes. ❤️
“Liars will not be believed even when they speak the truth.” The trouble with this quote from an old recording of Aesop’s Fables is that disinformation is so ubiquitous. It is made worse by AI, which makes it almost impossible to tell the difference between truth and lies.
A Nazi technique that has been adopted by this regime is to keep repeating lies, and eventually, they will be believed. Sometimes I think even the liars begin to believe the lies they are spreading.
Recently, I have not been receiving notifications of your posts. Several people have been reporting this problem. I will try to resubscribe.

You’re welcome, Cheryl. We’re facing a critical situation with all the lies. I imagine that when one creates an alternate reality based on lies, one’s vision of the truth becomes blurred.
Sorry to learn about the notifications problem. It’s difficult to know whether it’s just a glitch on WordPress or the AI bots at work. Since viewers from China have returned to my blog, the number of visitors to my blog have plummeted.

I am sorry to hear about your falling numbers, Rosaliene. I would not have expected China to be interested in WordPress. Their economy and technology are booming, including support of the environment and clean energy technology. They are moving ahead while the US seems to be moving backward. Take care. Hoping for better days.
