This book, The Twisted Circle, is an amazing heartfelt journey of a young devout sister, Barbara, in Guyana. She begins her chosen path pure in her faith and devotion. She is immediately sexually harassed by her first priest and in escaping him, she transfers to a remote school that devours her with its own demented jealousies and hidden abusive practices. Her struggle, like all of our struggles, is goodness trying to move forward despite serious roadblocks and the ill will of those who can only express pain and destruction. Her story shows what bravery can look like when faced by insurmountable odds. A misogynistic church run by men and women who have sold their souls to keep the old ways in place offers her no help or protection. This is a place where children are hurt.
Losing becomes swift and heartless. And it does not differentiate between the good and the evil. Barbara must face the reality of what her world has become. You will come away with a marvelous memory of characters that breathe off the page and true heroism that lives on after all is lost.

Morning, Rosaliene. Was the writing process easier for some parts of the book than others?

Neil, it’s difficult to say as the entire writing process posed a challenge. While I worked at distancing myself from the characters, I was reliving a painful period in my life. It was a cathartic experience. The truth about my failure to meet the requirements of a good nun bubbled to the surface of the murky waters of the Barima River flooding the village of Penitencia (fictitious name). The Forest Spirit has set me free from the deception of those dark days spent in Santa Cruz (fictitious name).

Fantastic and well deserved! I received my copy of your book last week and couldn’t put it down. Gripping, moving, and well told story. I enjoyed the dual points of view by the protagonist and antagonist, deftly crafted with a lot of wisdom and insight. I’ll publish my review on my website once a period of mourning for my father in law has passed.

Thank you, Rosaliene. You wrote the character conflicts and plot twists well. The psychological underpinnings of the US nun character point of view was particularly impressive .

That’s so good to know, Rebecca. I worked diligently on researching and developing the character of the American nun.

Well, I can see that, her perspective felt authentic. She was a narcissist and that was compounded by the lost loved ones in her family.

Rosaliene, congratulations on this superb review – all-encompassing and seeing into the heart of your book. I am sorry to see that elements within the book were based on your own experiences, if I understand correctly. Sounds like an incredible book and a huge achievement to write and publish!

Thanks very much, Annika! The story was inspired by real events involving my conflict with an American nun, with whom I lived and worked, and my sexual harassment by the District Education Officer, representative of Guyana’s Ministry of Education for the region.
