2021 Storming of the United States Capitol, “The American Abyss” by Timothy Snyder, Trump’s Big Lie, Trump’s Coup Attempt 2020-2021
America will not survive the big lie [that Trump had won the election] just because a liar is separated from power. It will need a thoughtful repluralization of media and a commitment to facts as a public good. The racism structured into every aspect of the coup attempt is a call to heed our own history. Serious attention to the past helps us to see risks but also suggests future possibility. We cannot be a democratic republic if we tell lies about race, big or small. Democracy is not about minimizing the vote nor ignoring it, neither a matter of gaming nor of breaking a system, but of accepting the equality of others, heeding their voices and counting their votes.
~ Excerpt from the Essay, “The American Abyss,” by Timothy Snyder, The New York Times, January 9, 2021.
Timothy Snyder is the Levin professor of history at Yale University and the author of Our Malady, On Tyranny, The Road to Unfreedom, Black Earth, and Bloodlands. He has received the literature award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Hannah Arendt Prize, and the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding.
Professorie Snyder nailed it !

Kamtan, to our demise, we continue to ignore the lessons of history.

It’s incredible to me that so many people refuse to see and believe facts and truths. There are a variety of reasons for that. Plus, humans have very malleable minds.

Neil, it’s not incredible when you think about how they have been systematically fed with disinformation, conspiracy theories, and outright lies. We humans do, indeed, have very malleable minds 😦

It’s a sad state of affairs. The fact that so many people believe it is a failure of democracy by itself.

Pallavi, it’s scary to realize that these events did not happen by chance.

The capitol mob of so-called decent, law-abiding, patriotic citizens is just like the lynch mobs and race rioters who terrorized Black communities in the name of righting some perceived wrong and preserving the way of life they held do dear.

John, that became clear to me when I saw the “patriot” carrying the confederate flag into the Capitol building, as well as the noose hanging outside the building.

Great words. I was beyond frustrated with these events of those thugs storming the Capitol. If they were Black, Arab, or even Latinx, they’d be gunned down before they even reached the steps instead of being just let in the building.

I agree, Ospreyshire. How different the response to the peaceful protestors of the Black Lives Matter Movement!

Exactly! The stuff going on now when you compare it to last Summer is so stark in its contrast.

Very beautifully said! It’s tragic it came to this 😢

Winteroseca, it is, indeed, tragic. How relieved you must be at this moment that you and your Mom have moved to Canada!

Well, yes and no. I mean, we were in danger which was why we moved. However, I wish I could have taken everyone I know and love with me! I hate to see everyone grieving in their own way over this

Thank you, I feel like the discussion of race has been absent from the news I’ve seen. In the US, we have a problem, a very white problem. Standing in the way of democracy is not a right, it is not right and it is an act of white privilege in this case, as ospreyshire says above.

Rebecca, there’s an African American poet and writer in Kentucky who has been very vocal about America’s “very white problem.” You can check out her post about the storming of the US Capitol at the following link: https://writesomeshit.com/2021/01/08/dear-kentucky-your-hypocrisy-white-supremacy-is-showing/

Thank you, Rosaliene. The video of her poem “Spaces” is very powerful. I appreciate the article as well. Wisconsin cannot pretend to be any less racist than Kentucky.

Yes, the poem is wonderful. I was particularly struck by the line “walking a road not paved for my feet”.

I’m interested in “a thoughtful repluralization of media and a commitment to facts as a public good,” and wondering what repluralization means beyond making more numerous. Maybe making more diverse?

JoAnna, the word ‘repluralization’ also caught my attention. I got a sense of a call for the media, representing both the left- and right-wing groups, not to take sides in the political divide but to double-down on presenting the facts of issues and events that impact us all as citizens of the nation.

Hi Rosaliene…My head is still spinning from the events of the past 2 months. I absolutely agree that we ignore history at our own peril.

Fools forget/ignore at their peril !

Henry, my head is also spinning that this could come to pass. Worse yet, our president did not accomplish this blow to our democracy on his own. He had collaborators within the Republican Party, the media, and many others.

Thank you for sharing!!.. Many in today’s world societies do not wish change and in the past have been able to ignore issues (out of sight, out of mind) and those like Donald Trump simply tell them what they wish to hear… however, change is in the winds in spite of the efforts of closed minded ideologies and the recent events have been a wake up call, the key is not to over react… 🙂
Until we meet again..
May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life’s passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!
