We can overcome the anxieties and fears that assail us daily during these uncertain times. As Dr. Gerald Stein, a retired psychotherapist from Chicago, reminds us: “We are the descendants of those who [have endured and surmounted misfortune] again and again for thousands of years.”
If the political-pandemical moment has lit your hair on fire, I offer a suggestion. Get into the shower. But since I can’t personally help with this remedy, let me provide some calming words.
We must begin here: many people fear the worst outcome in the U.S. election come November.
Some ask me for my opinion, my prediction, my reassurance.
I tell them I have enough trust in the good sense of the majority of my fellow-citizens to save the democratic republic. Hope and experience sustain me. I do what a concerned citizen can do. I will vote and, until events are past, take modest political action via the phone, the mail, and contributions to candidates I support.
These thoughts and efforts, however, do not dominate my time or my life.
Yes, potential chaos and catastrophe loom, but few souls profit by submerging themselves in disastrous scenarios. They are instead immobilized…

Kim, I’m glad you also like Dr. Stein’s post. We need to tackle our current crises with calm minds.

A very wise person once said to me, “Consider the source”. What that means is that we as individuals are the people we are thanks to our own past, but also this generation is where we are because of the decisions of past generations

Very true, Winteroseca. We humans have been on our current path since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The struggle of the masses for equality, justice, and freedom from oppression is taken up by each new generation.

What is needed is prominent Republicans to publicly and forcefully come out against Trump. Tom Ridge has done this. Unfortunately, it appears that most Republicans are gutless. We’ve known that for a long time, of course. As a result, democracy potentially will suffer.

Neil, I agree with you that more prominent Republicans need to speak out. I used to think of them as gutless, but have now come to believe that they are committed to holding onto power by whatever means necessary. Power corrodes our moral compass.

In which case they are even worse than gutless.

Agreed, very few adhere to morals. In a world of upheaval, Dr Steins words provide solace.

Thanks for your calming words. So much going on right now. Good centeredness.

Rebecca, the calming words come from Dr. Stein. I believe that we need “good centeredness” more than ever if we are to diffuse the divisiveness set into play.

Yes, I think it could be very healing.

Sadly, I do not share his trust in the ‘good sense of the majority of my fellow-citizens’, for I saw what happened in 2016, and I see what is happening today. Sigh. So, I fail to be comforted by calming words, but I do thank you for trying.

Jill, thanks for your sharing your own misgivings about our current political climate. I believe that Dr. Stein’s “calming words” are intended for those individuals who become immobilized by their fears and anxieties. We need “good centeredness,” to use Rebecca’s term, if we are to engage in the electoral process and cast our votes.

Ahhh … yes. I don’t become immobilized, I just become angry and fight that much harder. I think the world needs all kinds … those who bring calming words and those who roll up their sleeves and fight and those who bring people together. Hopefully, we all make a difference and a year from now we can breathe normally again! 😉

Thank you for sharing this with us. It’s so much more rational than most of the reports we hear of the US situation.

I thought so, too, Cath. We need more rational voices to prevent we the people from falling victim of those who sow fear and hatred among us.

An important share. It has gotten me to take a look at how much time I spend thinking thoughts of catastrophe, or at least worrying about what might happen. But I will work to give equal time to peace and harmony. Not easy, but possible.

Same here, JoAnna. First, I had to deal with anxiety due to the coronavirus. Now, it’s also threats directed towards Democratic leaders and states like California, my home state.

I’m shaking my head at the insanity. But we must stay sane. I’m taking a deep breath.

Thank you for sharing!!… I don’t spend a great deal of time worrying about catastrophes… I spend my time learning how to sail my ship and dance in the rain…. “Don’t be pushed around by the fears in your mind. Be led by the dreams in your heart.” ― (Roy T. Bennett )… 🙂
Hope all is well in your part of the universe and all your tomorrows are filled with love and happiness!…. 🙂
