Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own by Eddie S. Glaude Jr., Racism in America, Trumpism, White supremacy (the lie)
Americans must walk through the ruins, toward the terror and fear, and lay bare the trauma that we all carry with us. So much of American culture and politics today is bound up with the banal fact of racism in our daily lives and our willful refusal to acknowledge who benefits and suffers from it. Underneath it all is the lie that corrupts American life. It corrupts how we imagine governance; how we think about our private lives (constraining even who we can love); and how we imagine community and the broader public good. The lie is the lifeblood of Trumpism. Anything that does not corroborate its reality is dismissed as “fake news.” Anyone who doesn’t fit the view of America as a white nation or refuses to submit to it is cast as a traitor or as someone who hates America.
Excerpt from the Conclusion (p. 211) of Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own by Eddie S. Glaude Jr., published by Crown, a division of Penguin Random House LLC, New York, USA, 2020.
Eddie S. Glaude Jr., born in 1968 in Mississippi/USA, is the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University. His most well-known books are Democracy in Black: How Race Still Enslaves the American Soul (2016) and In a Shade of Blue: Pragmatism and the Politics of Black America (2007).
What appears to me, as an outsider, admittedly, is that the police force seem barely trained and when they do something appalling, they seldom need fear any punishment. That is an excellent starting point for serious civil unrest.

In USA peacekeepers are …
1. Poo poo
2. National guard (military)
3. Military airforce army navy
Most of poo poo are ex-military trained
on how to kill…retrained on how not to
kill. Peacekeeping !
Poo poo carry guns ….
If I carry a gun I intend to will use it.
UK poo poo do not carry guns
Bobby on the beat.
However in major airports or terrorist
high risk areas they do carry AK47 slung over
shoulder in readiness ! More as a deterrent than
useage.
Today most wear bullet proof clothing are
fitted with cameras lasers tasers and sten
guns.
Used mostly in self defence or arrests.
Some are even charged/prosecuted and
incarcerated for misuse of their powers
of arrest. Citizens also have “powers of arrest”
Civilised way of peace keeping
As USA troops are withdrawn worldwide
(Obsoleted) maybe they should be recruited
into UN peacekeeping forces…more defensive than offensive role.
Conclusion
USA could become a “dictatorship” after 3rd November…as per Putin’s Russia or Belarus ?

John, police impunity is, indeed, a contributing factor to the targeted killings of blacks here in the USA.

Kamtan, truth-telling is always hard to take, but it’s good to know what some of our British friends really think about our country. Considering that the UK and the USA are best buddies on the world stage, an American “dictatorship” government would not be good for the British people.

Not good for Americans also.
Don’t forget USA refused to pay tax/royalties
to UK kicking their Royals out !
Also Britain had to repay USA billions in war debts incurred during WW2.
If Churchill had surrendered to Hitler
USA would have been next on Hitlers
conquest. The nazi successfully invaded
/occupied Channel Islands.
It was pearl harbour that dragged USA
into WW2.
History is usually written by the victors
not vanquished.
Not long before 3rd November now !
All will be revealed !

If 45 gets to be 46, which I’m still hoping he won’t, there could also be a serious revolution. I hope it doesn’t come to that. I hope sanity will prevail and we can get back to the hard enough work of healing.

I fear there will be a revolution either way…or maybe I fear there won’t be a revolution. We cannot continue down the road we are presently traveling.

I understand and agree. Maybe we could have a revolution to demand the media and leaders stop trying to divide the people. Anything we can do to bridge the divide could help.

Professor Glaude is an eloquent spokesman for a message we all need to listen to if the Republic is to heal itself. Thank you, Rosaliene.

Dr. Stein, this is the first book I’ve read by Eddie S. Glaude Jr. “Eloquent” perfectly describes his writing in Begin Again. He weaves Baldwin’s life and work into America’s past and present with such mastery that the lie that binds our nation becomes vivid and all-consuming. For me, it was also an immersive experience into the life of a visionary that rent my heart and soul. As you must know well from your psychotherapy practice, it’s not easy to see and let go of the lie(s) that define us, especially if we enjoy the benefits of the lie(s).

If I lived in USA would be making plans to
leave after 3rd November ….no ifs or buts ! Guyana’s jungle an attractive option.
Spent few days in Bon Fin Lethem few years ago and enjoy the cuisine/culture.
With the Atlantic road from Roraima to GT top of agenda it will make access to
Boa Vista Manaus Lethem GT much easier.
Let’s hope new kids on block prove to
be success.

If by “silent” you mean “not voting,” in 2016 a majority (by almost 3,000,000) voted for Hillary Clinton. As we know, the ‘silent majority’ in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania is what did her in, and I agree that if that happens again in 2020, non-voters in those three states will indeed be complicit.

Most of poo poo USA are ex-military
where they were trained to kill !
Retraining cannot correct the military mindset.
Ex military should be directed/encouraged to
join UN peace keepers not local poo poo peacekeeping. Way forward.
My two cents

Five years ago, I thought I understood a lot about racism. In the past year, my eyes have been opening to things I have found horrible and baffling showing me how limited my understanding has been. If only people were willing to open up, to listen to try to understand, to learn. Facing some of these truths is not easy, but they are crucial. Some people cannot be reached, but I keep wondering how we can find common ground, common humanity, to get back to healing. Other times, I want to research the possibility of moving to New Zealand. I suppose every country has it’s struggles. I pray we can get through this and move toward peace. I have a feeling it’s going to be a long road either way because 45 is a symptom of a social and spiritual disease.

Thanks for sharing, JoAnna. I, too, have been learning a lot about racism as manifested here in the USA. What I have found most baffling is the way my white Christian brothers and sisters have embraced our overtly racist president. I’m currently reading White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity by Robert P. Jones (2020). What complicity and deception! How we humans lie to ourselves without question! More about Jones’ book in a future post.

Definitely true! There is also nothing like living as a US citizen in a foreign country to realize those flaws. It especially hits you when you move back to the US. What I find disgusting is just this complete disrespect for your fellow citizens, no matter who they are. I lived in an immigrant neighborhood in England representative of the former British Commonwealth, so I was one of a few white people there. Even so, we all respected each other as fellow citizens should do. I miss that!

Thank you for sharing!.. for years many have been hiding behind a image created for the rest of the world to see… technology is slowly removing the image to show reality…. change will come at the foundation, not the top… no matter how dark the skies or challenges put before us, one must never give up their dream… “Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird, that cannot fly.” (Langston Hughes )… 🙂

Racism is so prevalent once one is open to seeing it. The scariest part for me is realizing how imbedded it is in our society. It’s going to be a tough process to change these structural flaws. I wish we could actually have an open discussion about how to fix these problems with our culture rather than arguing about their existence. We need to make some actual progress instead of pretending things are fine the way they are.
