The [COVID-19] pandemic should awaken us to the realization that in a just world, social fetters should be replaced by social bonds, ideals that trace back to the Enlightenment and classical liberalism. Ideals that we see realized in many ways. The remarkable courage and selflessness of health workers is an inspiring tribute to the resources of the human spirit. In many places, communities of mutual aid are being formed to provide food for the needy and help and support for the elderly and disabled.
There is indeed “an uplift in solidarity among common people in many parts of the world, and perhaps even the realization that we are all global citizens.” The challenges are clear. They can be met. At this grim moment of human history, they must be met, or history will come to an inglorious end.
~ Noam Chomsky in excerpt from a discussion with Robert Pollin from the article “Chomsky and Pollin: To Heal From COVID-19, We Must Imagine a Different World” by C.J. Polychroniou, Truthout, published April 10, 2020.

Somehow it seems everyone knows what to do, yet beliefs and rhetoric overtake human genuity and people feel compelled to pick sides.

Jim, that’s the unfortunate result when we politicize a health crisis that affects our species worldwide.

That man is one of America’s last great thinkers. It’s such a shame he is not heeded more generally.

It’s hard to imagine a different world as long as Trump is in power. At this point, I’ll settle for a November election to a post-Trump world, and at that point, the nightmare will be over in January and we can dream of a re-imagined world.

I’m afraid Mistermuse, that America, hence a large part of the world, has been taken over by a series of military juntas with the collusion of money interests and major religious organizations. Trump is the clown hired to fill in between the change over from corporate “resource rape” and banksterism to military/security control. This current “pandemic” is a live, very successful military exercise, boldly admitted to by Pompeo. It’s over and done. Your democracies are essentially gone, remaining in name only. It’s not as if the world wasn’t warned this was the elites’ plan all along but the people insisted on believing by consuming and proliferating with no end in sight.
“And the people bowed and prayed,
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, “The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls,
And tenement halls”
And whispered in the sounds of silence” (from “The Sound of Silence” by Simon an Garfunkel)
I committed those lyrics to memory when I first heard them, mid 60’s. I knew they would prove prophetic. Big things happened in America during those years, including the fight against segregation and the end of the Vietnam war, and many of us were so sure we had ushered in our age of peace and love… I say “us” but I wasn’t one of the believers. It had been too easy, as in, it wasn’t a climb but a slide. Now here we are… still sliding down but the bottom is much closer and it’s not a pretty sight down there where the bodies, the filth and corruption of a world-dominating murderous and genocidal military empire have been stacking up to meet and great us. This is no accident or miscarriage of natural justice: it’s called karma.

Sha’Tara, you are so right when you note that the victory of the people for a better world has been short-lived. The Masters of our world always succeed in making a comeback with even greater might. The struggle goes on…

When I said “we can dream of a re-imagined world,” I meant no more than that. We will never have the world we want, but with Trump gone, we will at least be rid of the country we DON’T want. I’ll take that for starters, warts and all. How much beyond that we get, is anybody’s guess (and anybody’s hope).

It’s like replacing a flat tire. No actual repairs are done. A spare is installed and the flat tire is put back in the vehicle to be dragged around until it is fixed or forgotten. It’s really a subterfuge but it works for a bit, unless there is second flat and now, no spares. I think this is what your country is looking at now. Both Trump and Biden are flats, both totally unsuitable for the vehicle you are riding in. Do you have any serviceable spares left? Last time you had the Greens and turn-coat Sanders could have gone over to them instead of supporting Killery for all the good that did him.

Mister Muse, according to our health experts, our Coronavirus nightmare will not be over in January. Moreover, until our two major parties can work together for the good of our nation, the deadlock will persist no matter who wins in November.

Rosaliene, when I said “the nightmare will be over in January”, I didn’t say or mean that the Coronavirus pandemic will be over — I meant that the nightmare of Trump as President will be over. I’ve also said (elsewhere) that much depends on Democrats winning the Senate and retaining control of the House. Even if that happens, I don’t believe for one second that the GOP will stop being the uber-capitalists they’ve always been, though I wouldn’t be surprised if (no longer being cowed by an out-of-powerTrump) some of them ‘bravely’ start ACTING human again.

If we plan and organize, there’s still a remote possibility that COVID19 may have saved us from catastrophic climate change.

Dr. Bramhall, such an outcome would depend on us continuing to maintain our current reduced consumption levels and carbon emissions.

Kim, Chomsky is an American treasure to me. It’s people of his age–people that some in our government think are disposable–that are most threatened by this virus. How easily we forget that we all have value.

Don, we’re all in this together. COVID-19 has no regard for state borders nor our political affiliations. The protestors, rising up against the stay-at-home mandates nationwide, are being manipulated by right-wing corporate interests that care not for the best interests of we the working people of America.
Take heart, my Southern brother. We the people must prevail ❤

Perhaps the differences are so bad that it would be better to let those four or five dissenting states leave the union and form their own little breakaway country. Those remaining in the Union can get on with living as one with their neighbours. Since most of those states will take from the Federal Government more than they put in there will be nothing owing when they leave and an added bonus is that their Senators and Representatives.will have to go too. Maybe America can have a few years of peace and can organise a true caring society

David, thanks for dropping by and sharing your comments. Should such a day come, it would, indeed, be a tragic one for all Americans. Our enemies would like nothing better than to see the collapse of our Union.

Yet these people are working from within the Union to break it up.They are obviously unhappy and don’t approve of the Democratic way. They are turning the Supreme Court Conservative in order to force their way on the majority which will remove Obamacare or what’s left of it. I don’t think you can avoid it collapsing, it’s just a case of when. The camps on the Border can go and immigrants be welcome again.A lot less weapons being bandied about will make life easier and more pleasant.
Hugs

Indeed, David, a nation divided within itself cannot stand forever. You might appreciate the futuristic novel, American War by Omar El Akkad (USA, 2017). The story begins in April 2075 in St. James, Louisiana, during the Second American Civil War that breaks out in 2074.
