China
A pacing threat¹ to American hegemony
slashed with tariffs of 100 percent
—then not.
Chinese hackers
masters of Cyberwarfare
launched Salt Typhoon²
reported in October 2024
worst telecom hack in America’s history
at least eight telecom companies infiltrated.
My little WordPress blog
grabbed viewers from China
four on August 8 then
climbed to 96 by August 30.
Come September the number soared
1716 views on September 15
3347 two days later
the highest number recorded that month.
October showed no loss of interest
2174 views on October 4
2629 six days later
the highest number recorded that month.
What’s up with this attraction?
I don’t follow any bloggers in China.
Did someone share one of my articles
on a Chinese network?
They’re just bots, my techno-savvy son said.
Nothing to worry about.
Internet bots³
computer programs operating on the World Wide Web
invisible robots doing boring stuff for their bosses
shadow thieves harming lives or spies creating havoc.
Are they spiders or web crawlers
indexing my blog content for their search engines?
Maybe a few.
Thousands for over two months?
Seems like overkill.
Are they web scraping crawlers
harvesting data and extracting content
for use on Chatbots?
Possibly.
My suspicious mind says they are
malicious bots—spambots and hackers
searching for sensitive information
harvesting email addresses
installing malware and worms.
I imagine the worst.
I’m totally spooked!
On October 25 the number of views plunged to five.
At month’s end it stabilized at seven.
The Chinese love bomb may have ended
but watchers remain vigilant.
Are they watching you, too?

You’re welcome, Martina. Though your blog may not be active, you should check your “Stats” for recent activity.

I wonder if that is why I have been getting ridiculous spikes in my views (more than 700 in an hour recently)

Derrick, it’s good to know that my blog is not the only one with a spike in viewers.

I, too, have gotten a big boost in views over the last few days. Not from one country, but a sweeping look at most everything I have ever written on my blog. Actual human readers seem unlikely.

Dr. Stein, it would seem that the AGI companies have found a trove of content on WordPress. It would be great if the WP Team would address this issue.

I have had similar thoughts, Rosaliene. Perhaps we should attach some sort of “vacuum cleaner” detector!

A fascinating—and unsettling—experience, Rosaliene! I looked at my October numbers, and yes… China had over 1000 views (which is rare for me). Your story highlights how our creative worlds now intersect with digital risks. Thanks for reminding… and I wonder if it is their AI DeepThink “learning us” for the creation of new and improved algorithms. 🤔

Randall, based on your experience and other bloggers here, I suspect you may be right that AI DeepThink must be at work here on WordPress. There should be a way for us to protect our content from these AGI bots.

A similar spike in visitors/views from China happened to me, Rosaliene. Puzzling, and I hope not nefarious.

It’s my hope, too, Dave. Yet, excessive movement of this kind by AGI companies, whatever the country of origin, cannot be in our interest as content creators.

It is quite a creepy feeling, isn’t it, Roz. I have had a similar experience for the past 2 days. Views of long lists of old posts, so far with views mostly from the U.S.

It is quite creepy, indeed, Carol. I read earlier in your latest post that you’ve also experienced a spike in views. With this shared activity, I suspect that AGI companies must now be after our content on WordPress.

It sure is crazy, Allan. I also find it disconcerting that we can’t really know how many human visitors/viewers are really reading our posts. Enjoy the rest of your day!

Rosaliene, talk about insanity! 😝 But this remains true: “shadow thieves harming lives or spies creating havoc…”
I saw a report on just how dangerous AI is becoming yesterday. And it’s being targeted on so many innocent people trying to make a decent and honest living. Let’s not even talk about those of us out here trying to do and project the right thing. 😣
It’s sad how there are folks who have nothing better to do than to wreak havoc just because they can! UGH!😡

Kym, it’s truly insane how these AI bots, whether beneficial or not, have taken over our virtual spaces and affecting our real lives. We’ve set Pandora free and now there’s no going back.

Honey Rosaliene, you said a mouthful. The lid on Pandora’s Box exploded and as you noted…ain’t no turning back. 😣 The genie can’t be forced back into the bottle! 🧞

It happened to my blog too, and also from Singapore. I was told the bots are ‘learning’, not malicious, but who knows 😊 Maggie

Maggie, with Singapore also in the game, it looks like this is not yet over. Even if they’re just ‘learning,’ they are doing so at our expense.

Add my concern to yours, Rosaliene. I half-heartedly started researching how to better protect my site and then let it all go with the feeling that it was too late. It’s all just too much.

Tracy, there’s the option of making one’s website/blog private with access only to approved subscribers. I opted for the added protection of an authentication code. I googled my name in search of stolen content and found my two novels listed for (?illegitimate?) sale on a Taiwanese platform that sells a diverse variety of goods. Being in the public domain comes with all kinds of risks.

My blog is on a much smaller scale than yours, small enough to notice 61 views from China in October. It hadn’t occurred to me that it could be bots, but I was a little concerned.
As always, you educate me and cause me to think. Thank you Rosaliene.

Steve, thanks for adding your thoughts. The only thing that makes sense to me is that the owners of these bots are using our content to teach their AGI language models.
By the way, I’m not yet rid of the Chinese bots. After falling to 4 views on November 3, they have increased to 720 views as at this time today (Pacific Time).

You’re welcome, Cindy. I read this last night in Goliath’s Curse: The History and Future of Societal Collapse by Luke Kemp (USA 2025, p. 322):
Data is fast becoming the latest lootable resource that can be easily seen, captured, transported, and stored. While we celebrate the CEOs of leading AI companies, the algorithms themselves are models of collective intelligence founded on our collective data. All this data is extracted from the web without our consent, while none of us receives a single dollar in compensation for our valuable data.

Yes, this is eye-opening and also very maddening especially the no consent and just stripping people of their time, energy and labor of love. I think I cut off my nose despite my face since I’m not participating in any AI applications even when it’s on my phone and supposedly just for me.. there’s something about it in the ways you talk about it that really strike a cord in me! Thanks for sharing that

I plan to contact them tomorrow.

Rebecca, I appreciated the gentle prod. I found help through the WP AI Assistant who informed me that “WordPress.com has built-in security measures that filter out most bot traffic from your stats, but some automated traffic can still get through. Real visitors from China could be finding your content through search engines or social media shares.” I was advised to investigate the “Referrers” for unusual sources. I verified that all referrers were indeed search engines, with one exception that I marked as spam. I’m sorry that I didn’t record the address as it is no longer listed among “Referrers” on My Stats page.
November 6th closed with a record number of 10,238 views by approximately 5,000 visitors from China. This is unprecedented. Today, I received congratulations from WordPress for having passed 500,000 all-time views. Yet, I’m not at all inclined to celebrate 😦

Hm, at least 400,000 are real people I’d imagine. Hope the bots cease and desist soon.
