A nation turned against itself, Be kind, Craft and Conscience: How to Write About Social Issues by Kavita Das (USA 2022), Moral Clarity, Social issues

Five weeks have passed since I last attempted to share my dilemma in adjusting to a new social-political environment. The assaults on our daily lives and livelihood, especially on black- and brown-skinned working-class people, have been relentless and vicious. The issue I had originally planned to address quickly lost importance with yet another issue demanding attention. This constant flogging by a vindictive patriarch is designed to overwhelm and traumatize us into a state of stupor.
I am currently reading Craft and Conscience: How to Write About Social Issues by Kavita Das (USA, 2022), a native New Yorker teacher, writer, and speaker. In Chapter 7: Ripple Effects of Making Waves, she raised the debate about moral clarity in journalism. At the time (August 2021), American journalists were “raising concerns about the recent tendency by journalism outlets to publish writing that is morally reprehensible under the misguided assumption that this is necessary in order to appear balanced by providing multiple perspectives on an issue” (p. 237).
As defined by Russian American journalist Masha Gessen, quoted by Das (p. 237): “moral clarity is a quest, guided by clear values and informed by facts and context, and clearly aligned with the original concept of journalistic objectivity.” Facts are not debatable.
In my view, the poem “I Know You by Your Scent” by Brazilian poet Ricardo Aleixo, featured in my Poetry Corner September 2025, is filled with moral clarity. Does moral clarity shine through my own writing? Within an alternative reality, where facts and morals have been corrupted, moral clarity has become a minefield. Opposing narratives are punishable with erasure and much more.
It’s easy to erase the historical record of genocide and chattel slavery that makes us look bad as a nation. The truth lives on in our collective stories passed on through generations and in our DNA. Truth that haunts. Truth that cries out for justice. Truth that warps the mind. Truth that negates inner peace.
We are a nation that has turned against itself. As I see it, many forces are at play for the soul (at least, what’s left of it) of our nation. Destruction of the Old Guard/Order appears to be the end game. While competing billionaires vie to consolidate their power, we the people merely become collateral damage.
Nevertheless, we are not powerless. First, we must disconnect from the social media platforms that are corrupting our minds with fear and hatred of those who don’t belong to our tribe. Next, we must find ways to reconnect with each other and with Mother Earth. Above all, we must be kind.

I very much agree with your thoughts, Rosaliene, and thank you for this post!

The script for this plan stipulates that traditional values must first be destroyed: faith in the constitution, justice, empathy…and that includes morality. And that’s quite easy if you appropriately showcase the role models of a state and propagate them accordingly. Even here in Europe, we’re inundated with Charlie’s Whatever and Grieving Widow soaps…

Excellent post, Rosaliene, and it seems “Craft and Conscience: How to Write About Social Issues” is a very wise reading choice these days. Moral clarity might or might not be enough these days as Americans are immorally ruled, but it’s obviously worth having/pursuing.

Wow, I agree with your reflections here. It’s eye-opening for me, as I live in the UK, but can very much empathize with what you’re saying. Moral clarity is certainly something that affects us all. 🌹

Great reflections Rosaliene. Clickbait sends us more of what we click on and what they think we want to see. If we click only on our side of the matter, that is all we will ever see. It pays to click both sides and confuse the algorithm. Have a great Sunday. Allan

Thanks very much, Allan. That sounds like a good strategy. I’ve discovered that advertisers are also quick to pick up on our online search words. It’s like they’re reading our minds.

I would add to what you have said, Rosaliene.
We must find the historians and journalists who write from a standpoint of integrity.
This is not difficult if you have intelligent and well-read friends, who are also well-educated, and who do not profit from attachment to the oligarchs and autocrats or are mesmerized by a opinion-driven, so-called “news” outlets that offer no evidence for the opinions they offer.
Books also are informative if well chosen. I would recommend “The Violent Take It By Force: The Christian Movement That is Taking Our Democracy” by Matthew Taylor. This is not an indictment of all Christianity, but rather describes a particular segment and how it became attached to autocrat.
Finally, we must act by attending rallies, contacting our congressmen, supporting candidates who are fighting for democracy, etc.

Dr. Stein, thanks for adding other important ways of staying reliably informed and in changing course. I’ve noted your book recommendation. I recently started reading More Everything Forever: AI Overlords, Space Empires, and Silicon Valley’s Crusade to Control the Fate of Humanity by Adam Becker (USA, 2025). I’m awaiting my book order (a previous recommendation) of Goliath’s Curse: The History and Future of Societal Collapse by Luke Kemp.

Above all, we must be kind. Amen. Perhaps it’s cowardly of me, and I’ll own that, but I choose to just stay out of it. I do it for peace of mind, though. I’ve tried arguing with people, and it just puts me in a bad mood and is a waste of time.

Thanks for sharing this interesting book about a very interesting topic, Rosaliene. The way I see it, if you own the media, it’s easy to invent a believable narrative based on lies. We are all susceptible to lies especially as our media allows us to choose from different narratives based on our beliefs. The media is very dangerous stuff when owned by the few and for the sole purpose of advancing the few.

Mara, I share your view with regards to the media. In controlling the media, they control the narrative. It’s important to find reliable independent media outlets for staying informed.

Moral clarity is always important, and even more so now when big business is pumping vast sums of money into politicians pockets to sway them to speak and to behave the way they direct them to, which is selling out and selling off our nation. Large sums of money are very difficult for too many to say no to, and so we have an oligarchy.

Rosaliene, I have been avoiding watching conventional news in the last few months. The standard networks live in fear of reporting anything controversial. In short, we are not being given the big picture. Although I like “happy news,” I do not think it is a good substitute for truthful, comprehensive coverage.
I detest far-right “news,” with its distorted, selective coverage. I watch some of it, though, so I am aware of what they are broadcasting.
Independent news on YouTube may be the best alternative, even though watching is time-consuming. These channels compete with each other with sensational headlines and AI-generated parodies. Some of their advertising is quite “unusual.”
However, the content includes outstanding guests with great qualifications and experience. It takes courage to report news that is unpopular with the administration. The same goes for bloggers who speak out. Thank you, Rosaliene, for your honest posts.
Whatever news we watch, we need to watch thoughtfully. In this era, we can find the truth, but we have to think critically to evaluate what we see and hear.

Cheryl, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this critical issue. I totally agree with your closing remarks.
I rarely watch the Mainstream News Media. During my lunch break, I watch our local news to keep abreast with what’s going on in our city and state. Then, I watch the BBC news for international updates. I’ve signed up to receive news reports in my email box from three independent news organizations that I trust. You-Tube is a black hole that I avoid.

Rosaliene, thank you for your reply. We often watch PBS. International news is not very fully covered in US media, so I like BBC stories when we can get them. We don’t have very good sources of state and local news here. West Coast States seem to be more enlightened than Florida. I do like YouTube, but watch selectively.

Rosaliene, moral clarity is definitely evident in your writing, which permeates through your beautiful aura! 🤗👼🏽😇 I had to step away from the rhetoric coming from people who want to try to erase the existence of certain tribes, but after all of this time, they can’t do it. The next best thing is to beat folks down with their bull crap.
Still even if we’re knocked down, sistah, we’re not knocked out. The assaults are relentless, but we hold a precious key that is more powerful than the assaults! 🤜🏼🤛🏼 Continue to keep pressing forward, even when you don’t feel up to it! Do it anyway! 💖
