The [United Nations] Organization and its Members, in pursuit of the Purposes stated in Article 1, shall act in accordance with the following Principles.

We need Greenland for national security and even international security, and we’re working with everybody involved to try and get it. But we need it, really, for international world security. And together, we will take Greenland to heights like you have never thought possible before.

Greenland was ruled by Denmark from the early 18th century until 1979, when home rule began. In 2009, Greenland approved the Self-Government Act in a referendum, making it an autonomous territory. However, as an integral part of the Realm of Denmark, Greenland’s foreign, defense, and security policies rest with Denmark.
As the world’s largest island, Greenland is over five times the size of the State of California. With a population of only 56,583 (2022 est.), it is the least densely populated region in the world. Its mineral wealth and strategic position between Europe, North America, and the Arctic region make the island a magnet for global superpowers.
On your outdated map it still says “Gulf of Mexico”: How retro is that? 🙂

Nobody knows how things will go, when a madman is in charge. He is prepared to use military force in Greenland and Panama, as well as a military incursion into Mexico to strike cartels. He is already using economic chaos to take Canada. In order to do this without any qualms, he is prepared to withdraw both from NATO and the UN, to avoid the established conventions. He chastises others for not negotiating peace, all the while using bullying and threats to get what he wants. And so the world ends. Welcome to bizarro world. Happy Sunday Rosaliene. Allan

Trump has done some good things, but his ego seems out of control now. I have long been an advocate of small, not big, better to manage from within. I believe Greenland wants to maintain its independence. Maybe the US doen’t want another state or territory. Can Donald Trump speak for all? I doubt it.

Katharine, an elected leader can never speak for all voters. To stay in power, the elected must serve the interests of those who have paid exorbitant amounts to secure his/her election.

Ashley, I’m also old enough to see the rapid changes underway. I believe that he is just a puppet. Like him, those manipulating the strings are masters of creating chaos to achieve their goals.

Maggie, I also find it a scary time. Given the global existential crises we face, due to climate change and ecosystems collapse, the minority power elite might well be taking their last stand for self-preservation.

Trump’s a fascist and a wacko. The voting public had the sense to vote him out of office in November 2020. It boggles the mind that they chose to put him back in power four years later.

It is hard to say anything new about the forces in play against everything the United States stood for, however imperfectly, until recently. Still, thank you Rosaliene, for the documentary evidence of how that history is happily torn apart by malevolent forces.

You’re welcome, Dr. Stein. As you point out, my intention is to highlight the historical significance of current events now set in motion. The Old Order established by the 1945 UN Charter is being dismantled together with the US governing institutions.

We can remind people of the provisions of the US Constitution, NATO, and the UN, but there are those in power who will choose to ignore all of these organizations. Maybe if enough people point out these obligations and the fact that leaders are violating the law, the tide may turn.

An excellent post, Cheryl. I do my best to find reliable and trustworthy sources of information to stay informed. Since non-white immigrants are now regarded and treated as enemies, I have to be very careful about my online footprints. This is the reality of living under an authoritarian government that penalizes dissent of any kind.

Michele, thanks for sharing the link to the article. I can well imagine the concerns Greenlandic families must now face with this added threat from America. How tragic that, as president, he has not yet moved beyond seeing everything as real estate transactions.

There’s not much more to be said beyond what’s already in the comments, though I’ll add that threats have united Canada like never before, even bringing the separatist movement of Quebec together with the rest of the provinces and territories to bolster our sovereignty. We’re known internationally for humility and politeness, but that doesn’t mean we’re a pushover.
Nonetheless, these are frightening times, Rosaliene.

Trump’s unstable and unpredictable even in what he says. Whether or not who follows through with his threats, he disturbs the world. I don’t understand how intelligent, good people could have voted for him, and I know a few of these. I’m baffled. My only answer is to pray.

So true, Mary. His unpredictability is bad for business and the national and global economies. I imagine that many people who voted for him are also baffled, as well as angry, with developments. There’s more to come when the consequences–such as delays in monthly social security payments–of these huge cuts in the federal workforce begin to take effect.

I think folks are sick and tired of the money grab. The outright stealing of precious resources in a land that belongs to someone else is what creates dissension and great hatred. We see that dictators who cause a war on other countries are the role models for this administration. Just when I think things couldn’t possibly get any worse…SURPRISE! It does. Rosaliene, I deeply regret the current climate of racism and anti-immigrant fervor. Some people have bought into false and misleading propaganda. They do not understand the contributions immigrants have made, both economically and culturally, and they have forgotten that we are a nation of immigrants.
This distressing era may soon fall of its own weight. I hope so. Then we may begin to reunite the people of our country and mend fences with our allies.

They don’t care about state sovereignity or anything other than $$, Rose. But that many megalomaniacs can’t get along nicely for very long and soon they will start to turn on each other. At least that’s a strong possibility.

The United Nations Organization is evidence that some humans are evolving to a higher level of consciousness. It’s sad that others, like our current President, are so far behind. Based on his values (or lack of values) DT’s idea of “heights like you have never thought possible before,” probably involve raping the land and what I would consider hellishly materialistic. I knew things would probably go downhill since his election, but I did not know that downhill slide would happen so frighteningly fast.

JoAnna, we the people of Earth have a long way to go to live up to our aspirations, as expressed in the 1945 UN Charter, for a better world for all its citizens. Nevertheless, we cannot give up trying to become our better selves.
We shouldn’t be surprised that the changes are coming at us so fast and furious. Armed with the Mandate/Project 2025 playbook, the transition team knew that they have only two years to dismantle our government, so that they were ready to start out running from Day One. They knew that the MAGA base would not have approved of many of these changes underway, especially to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

Ilsa, it may be a huge territory but about 80 percent of the landmass is covered by an ice sheet. Habitable land is limited to coastal areas where the majority of people live on the southwestern coast.
