NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION (NOAA)
Break Up NOAA. The single biggest Department of Commerce agency outside of decennial census years is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which houses the National Weather Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, and other components. NOAA garners $6.5 billion of the department’s $12 billion annual operational budget and accounts for more than half of the department’s personnel in non-decadal Census years (2021 figures).
NOAA consists of six main offices: The National Weather Service (NWS); The National Ocean Service (NOS); The Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR); The National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service (NESDIS); The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS); and The Office of Marine and Aviation Operations and NOAA Corps.
Together, these form a colossal operation that has become one of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry and, as such, is harmful to future U.S. prosperity. This industry’s mission emphasis on prediction and management seems designed around the fatal conceit of planning for the unplannable. That is not to say NOAA is useless, but its current organization corrupts its useful functions. It should be broken up and downsized. [Emphasis mine.]

Focus the NWS on Commercial Operations. Each day, Americans rely on weather forecasts and warnings provided by local radio stations and colleges that are produced not by the NWS, but by private companies such as AccuWeather. Studies have found that the forecasts and warnings provided by the private companies are more reliable than those provided by the NWS.
The NWS provides data the private companies use and should focus on its data-gathering services. Because private companies rely on these data, the NWS should fully commercialize its forecasting operations.
Excerpt from “Chapter 21: Department of Commerce” by Thomas F. Gilman from Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise, Project 2025 Presidential Transition Project by The Heritage Foundation, Washington DC, USA, 2023 (pp. 674-675).
Thomas F. Gilman served as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Administration and Chief Financial Officer of the U.S. Department of Commerce in the Trump Administration. Currently, he is a Director of ACLJ Action and Chairman of Torngat Metals. Gilman is the former CEO of Chrysler Financial and has had a 40-plus year career as a senior executive and entrepreneur in the global automotive industry, including roles at Chrysler Corporation, Cerberus Capital Management, Asbury Automotive Group, TD Auto Finance, and Automotive Capital Services. He holds a BS in finance from Villanova University.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is one of six agencies falling under the umbrella of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The agency’s mission is “to provide daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings, climate monitoring to fisheries management, coastal restoration, and the supporting of marine commerce. NOAA’s products and services support economic vitality and affect more than one-third of America’s gross domestic product. NOAA’s dedicated scientists use cutting-edge research and high-tech instrumentation to provide citizens, planners, emergency managers and other decision makers with reliable information they need when they need it.”

So still a commercially oriented service

As I understand it, Derrick, the framers of Mandate/Project 2025 are seeking to privatize the division.

It’s exhausting to consider how much momentum has been and is in the direction of profits and power ahead of humans and the planet. Unfortunately, it’s not just crazies on the Trump team.

You’re so right, Kim. The framers of the Mandate/Project 2025 are by no means crazy.

Thank you, Rosaliene! I always had the impression that the NWS and similar state institutions have gone through a similar development, such as the intelligence and security services sector (20+ now?). At a certain point, the main thing is to secure state budgets or better get more of them. This shifts the core concerns, creates distortions and the units isolate themselves from others so that they don’t have to give up their piece of the pie.

As I see it, Friedrich, this situation will only worsen with the global climate and ecological crisis, and the insecurity it will generate within and between nations.

That is a huge group and a huge group of responsibilities. Sounds like having them become a commercial entity could actually skew their research in favour of the highest bidders. Perhaps changing them into 3-4 smaller more focused entities might be the right thing to do. They could then get back to the basics. Weather, Oceans & Fisheries, Atmosphere and Transportation. All of these entities do valuable research, but do they need to be in one entity. Have a good Sunday Rosaliene. Allan

You raise some important considerations, Allan. Your observation of skewing their research in favor of the highest bidder is a valid one. The fossil fuel industry comes immediately to mind.

Hmmmmmm. Well, if I did my math correctly and the government budget is 6 trillion, than 6 billion is .1% of that (still a mind boggling number for me I’ll admit). Regardless of whether you believe climate change is caused by humans, there’s no denying our climate has gotten significantly more volatile in recent years and being able to predict bad weather would seem pretty important for both human and business survival. Would profit based privatized weather companies provide accurate weather predictions accessible to everyone? Thanks for sharing more about Project 2025, Rosaliene.

Thomas Gilman’s background does not make me confident of his ideas and knowledge with respect to weather, climate, the ocean, the atmosphere, and the best use of public resources in those areas. Thank you, Rosaliene.

I share your view, Dr. Stein. With his background, he sees only the amount of money that can be made in privatizing these agencies.

Mara, you raise very valid points. With increasing extreme weather disasters, accurate and timely predictions would definitely become a valuable commodity in the hands of profiteers.

I don’t think we know a fraction of the truth about much. We hear so much conflicting information.

This is not an accident, Mary. What better way to control and manipulate a population than feeding them disinformation and lies?

Seems like project 2025 is aimed at picking apart and controlling everything. What a mess.

I’m late to this discussion, Rosaliene, but thank you for highlighting this. I read “…the climate change alarm industry…” and wanted to punch something/someone. Tell that to the millions trying to recover from Helene and those now frantically trying to escape Hurricane Milton. We’re in such an ugly place that’s completely self-inflicted. Capitalism is killing us with a huge assist by the duopoly. 😦 SOLIDARITY!

It’s never too late to share your thoughts, Tracy. This morning, I read the article “Meteorologists Get Death Threats as Hurricane Milton Conspiracy Theories Thrive” by Lorena O’Neil, published by Rolling Stone on October 9, 2024 (see link below). It’s crazy that some people believe that the government is causing and/or controlling these supercharged hurricanes. This is what happens when far too many of our political leaders deceive their constituents about climate change.

Thank you for always being gracious, Rosaliene. I haven’t read this specific article but my spouse updated me on similar ridiculousness being thrown about. What a species we are!

HUH? Lord help us! I applaud your awareness and sharing your research with us Rosaliene. 🙏🏼 These folks need to be gagged and bound in a dark room with no windows until they get some plain ole decency, order, telling the truth (not their made-up pseudo-truth) and a heart of empathy! They are dangerous and won’t stop with their B.S. SMH! 😖

I can appreciate your anger, Kym. Tragically, it’s the people across parts of seven southeastern states, who have been devastated by Hurricanes Helene and Milton, who are now in the dark without power, cellphone communication, and water.

Girl Rosaliene, don’t even talk about it. I’m in North Carolina and the mountain area that was hit harder than we were in the Piedmont area is heartbreaking. I hate the lies that are circulating for ignorant reasons about this situation. Folks don’t understand until they have been impacted by such tragedy. 😣😠😖 It’s disgusting. Thanks my friend. 🙏🏼

Kym, I’m so glad that you’re safe. The lies circulating are very disturbing.

The lies are un-freaking real Rosaliene. Now, the new lie is that the government started Hurricane Helene and Milton using some bizarre contraption affecting the red states! Where are my earplugs when I need them? UGH! 😣🙄😠 This is so doggone crazy! 😖

Kym, as I see it, some of us would rather believe such bizarre lies than accept the terrifying reality before us. Fear and anxiety, resulting from the loss of control over our lives, can impair our capacity to think clearly.

Absolutely Rosaliene. I agree with you wholeheartedly my friend. Our thinking and sight has been impaired horrifically, and some people are sadly in so deep that nothing is clear, not even their hearts. 😓😖😢 Thanks my friend. 🥰🙏🏼💖

I’m also alarmed, Tamara, and scared of the possibility they could achieve their goals. Their attention to the smallest detail is noteworthy. Regardless of who wins in the coming election, we will have to pay close attention to their proposed legislation. They’ve already passed some critical legislation through their conservative majority on the Supreme Court.

I believe you are very right Rosaliene. They believe they’ve got God’s blessing and mandate, and believe they’re fighting a righteous battle. Russia’s ex president is now predicting a civil war in the US. Given the newest lies and misinformation coming from the red side, it seems entirely plausible that skirmishes between red and blue would become part of our landscape. There’s a huge increase in rhetoric lately and the fear/anger machine is fueling the ire. There have long been calls for battles, so that martial law can be imposed, and then the solutions enshrined in Project 2025 can be rolled out.
