There is no wealth on a dead planet

On Friday, September 20, 2019, millions of young people and supporting adults in more than 150 countries took part in the Global Climate Strike, calling on decision-makers to take immediate action to address our global climate crisis. I’m heartened that sixteen-year-old, Swedish environmentalist activist, Greta Thunberg, has awakened our youth to the future that awaits them.
“It’s just not the young people’s house,” Thunberg told the thousands of participants gathered in New York City. “We all live here. It affects all of us. Why should we study for a future that is being taken away from us? That is being stolen for profit? Some people say we should study to become climate scientists or politicians, so that we can, in the future, solve the climate crisis. But by then, it will be too late. We need to do this now.” (Emphasis mine.)
Three days later, at the United Nations Climate Action Summit 2019, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, in his opening remarks, reminded the global decision-makers present:
“The climate emergency is a race we are losing, but it is a race we can win. This is not a climate talk summit. We have had enough talk. This is not a climate negotiation summit. You don’t negotiate with nature. This is a climate action summit.” (Emphasis mine.)

His remarks did little to stir the adults present to action. After pulling out of the Paris Agreement, the United States had nothing to say. China made no new promises. By the end of the day, according to the Closing Press Release, 65 countries and the State of California committed to cut greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. Another 70 countries announced plans to boost their national action plans by 2020.
Net zero by 2050. That’s a thirty-year transition period. Sounds like more slow action to me.
In their analysis of “Killer Heat in the United States: Climate Choices and the Future of Dangerously Hot days,” published in July 2019, the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) shows that in a “slow action” scenario, global warming is projected to attain an average warming of 4.3℉ (2.4℃) by 2100. We have dragged our feet for so long that we should now be in emergency mode.
By their actions, our global elite show no desire to change a system that works for them. Their wealth affords them protection from the effects of extreme heat, drought, flooding, hunger, homelessness, infectious disease, and much more. They don’t care about us, the 99 Percent. We are as disposable as plastic straws and outdated electronic gadgets.
If we are to save ourselves as a species, we need a different narrative to transform our societies. Our Green New Deal presents such a change of narrative. Extinction Rebellion expands on this narrative. In their Vision Statement, they call for “a new world of love, respect and regeneration, where we have restored the intricate web of all life…” They add: “We rise in the name of truth and withdraw our consent for ecocide, oppression and patriarchy. We rise up for a world where power is shared for regeneration, repair and reconciliation. We rise for love in its ultimate wisdom. Our vision stretches beyond our own lifespan, to a horizon dedicated to future generations and the restoration of our planet’s integrity.”
I share their vision. I see no other way forward. Do you?
Such an important message, Rosaliene

Of course there are other ways forward.
Innovate and motivate the political jackasses
by voting them out ! They want our vote
so we vote them out !
No ifs or buts !
Politicians are sworn to the hypocritical
oath…some in principle not practice.
Political status quo !
Parties loyalty before voters !
Vote independents in who support your

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Kamtan. Our unfolding crises are much greater than any political party. This is greater than any one nation. It affects our entire planet. The United States, China, and wealthy European nations have to take the lead.

The burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) emits CO2, a potent greenhouse gas, to the atmosphere. This causes the air temperature to rise and the ocean acidity to increase resulting in global warming, melting ice caps, rising sea level, extreme weather, coral die off and the killing of oyster and clam larvae.

Thanks for dropping by, Leslie, and adding some of the details of the crises the human species currently face.
I’ve just read a Letter to the Editor of one of Guyana’s local newspapers in which a fourteen-year-old girl mentions the unusual heat wave hitting her country and affecting her mother’s health.

It’s a powerful “mission statement.” If mankind actually evolved to develop a vision of the future in time enough to accomplish something positive in this global crisis, that will be the miracle. Man has always been an extremely short-sighted creature contributing largely to his innate selfish nature.
I’ll say it again (and again!): it we do not include and target all of our societal evils in with attack on climate change, all efforts will once again be for naught. You cannot separate anti-anthropogenic climate change action from anti-misogyny, anti-racism, anti-war, anti-genocide, anti-oppression of the marginalized and dispossessed. We are not looking at separate issues. We should not be focusing on survival but on the creation of an entirely new civilization with entirely new ways of interacting.
Climate action by itself, even if it were successful, will only ensure that the deeper, much older sicknesses of society remain in full force and other global blights will arise to unseat man from global dominance, perhaps from any place at all in the natural order of things. The piecemeal approach to problem solving does not work. We know this, so why are we still pretending it can work? All it demonstrates is man’s on-going shortsightedness and callousness.

Well said, Sha’Tara! I couldn’t agree more. I would especially like to highlight your following remarks:
“You cannot separate anti-anthropogenic climate change action from anti-misogyny, anti-racism, anti-war, anti-genocide, anti-oppression of the marginalized and dispossessed. We are not looking at separate issues. We should not be focusing on survival but on the creation of an entirely new civilization with entirely new ways of interacting.”
We the people of Earth have failed to realize that ALL the ills of our societies are the bitter fruits of the capitalist narrative.

You’re right, incremental action won’t be sufficient. Worse yet, such incremental action has been little more than unfulfilled promises so far. I’m very pessimistic because the fundamental structural changes to our socioeconomic systems which are necessary to successfully mitigate climate change are being vehemently opposed by the ruling establishment.

Robert, it would appear that we humans have entered another period of the Dark Ages in our socio-economic-political evolution. We’ve been selling off the future of our offspring in the “futures market” for so long that we’re now in an emergency situation that demands a radical response. Worse yet, it demands unified global cooperation and action.
I believe that, in order to defeat the entrenched ruling establishment, we have to start a global grassroots movement. Our youth are presently leading the way. We adults have to get on board. If we are to leave a livable planet for our children, grandchildren, and future generations, we cannot hand over our collective power to the dominant few.

The minority is going to destroy the majority…makes no sense. Plus they hold all the cards and all the weapons
LikeLiked by 3 people
As long as people believe “in” authority they can only fall victims to said authority because, and we all know this, authority is power and power corrupts. That said, is there any legitimate authority? Do we actually need any authority at all or must that be one of the first sacred impositions we, the powerless majority, must quickly dethrone? We should be focusing on the sources, or perhaps the first and fundamental source, of our societal evils and failures and deal with that. In my 70 years what I’ve seen is a sense of hopelessness and helplessness when confronted with the specter of that “evil” source. We were taught to believe that we are the source but we can now see that is false, can’t we? If we were the cause of all our problems we’d be up there with the 1%-ile and it would be the 100%-ile. Where does the 1% get its “authority” to destroy our world and our lives? You say they have all the cards and all the weapons – true, but how did they get them, and how can they hold on to them? How do we dis-empower them? How do we stop feeding them, since we make their cards and we provide the cannon fodder for their wars: they certainly don’t fight them themselves. We desperately need to confront these problems we’ve allowed to grow out of control. We need to literally amputate the elitist, aristocratic cancer from the body politic. There’s no easy way to do that, as history has shown time and again. Do we push this dying nag of a civilization to the end of the trail to roll over and die, or do we turn around and confront the bogey man that is driving us to our death, and the death of our children? Are we willing to die to save our children’s world?
If that has the feel of an incendiary revolutionary speech prior to the storming of a stronghold, that’s exactly what it is. Time to get serious. Curse those who join the military and other oppressive forces, especially if they’re our own children and friends knowing that they will be trained and programmed to kill us. Curse those who “shop Amazon” to save a few bucks. Curse those who vote for elites red or elites blue. Curse those who go to church. Curse those who attend organized official sports events. Curse all who praise their bosses or ape elitist ways and propaganda.
Too strong? Nothing is too strong when life has been put on the line to achieve a purpose because nothing else matters. Words are cheap but blood makes a permanent mark. If we’re not ready to shed our blood then all our words are just breezes passing through the summer grass. When the grasses burn we will burn with them; we will not have been the ones who set the fires to die as martyrs.

Indeed, Mary, it makes no sense. We the people of Earth are the ones who–in fact–hold all the cards and all the weapons. We the people are the ones who wield the assault rifles, drop the bombs, command the drones that kill other humans. They give the orders. We execute their commands.
Their cards? A promise to allow a few–their vassals or henchmen–into their exclusive club.

The love of power versus the power of love. Love that Pam! Greta has set the ball moving towards dis-empowering the power elite, to use Sha’Tara’s words in her response to Mary. Our chances of winning depend upon you and me and every other member of the 99 Percent of humanity. I agree we need a new narrative, but it occurs to me that physical global warming correlates to psychological global warming, with all the competitive control-freaks vying for control, manipulating everyone (including each other) through fear and anger.
More suffocating than greenhouse gases, fear seems to be enshrouding the planet. Fear feeds on itself, and the paranoid control freaks feed on that energy and use it as a weapon.
I don’t know if the saying, “Where there is love, there is no fear” is true, but perhaps the new narrative should include the concept of love and respect for the planet and everything on it (even for the bad guys, who are possibly the most insecure).
Also, I have read that human emotion and thought affect the weather. Even if it doesn’t, it doesn’t hurt to think “cool thoughts,” at least until winter arrives.

Katharine, I’m so glad that you’ve raised the psychological aspect of the challenge humanity now faces. Margaret Klein Salamon raises this issue in her article, “With a Planet on Fire, This Is What It Means to Enter Emergency Mode,” published by Common Dreams on September 27, 2019. Never was a truer word said. The sad truth is that the people who make most of the pollution and cause most of the problems-China, India, the USA, probably Russia, and now we are told, the burning forests of Brazil and Indonesia, really don’t care at all.

Thank you for writing about this crucial challenge, Rosaliene. The extreme heat chart and gallows and ice graphic were new to me and particularly powerful. The US Federal Government’s lack of action is a dangerous embarrassment. I knew California has been doing better, but didn’t realize they had a presence at the summit. I looked that up and saw that California has committed to many international agreements. I admire and commend their wisdom in understanding the urgency of this matter. My wish, hope, and prayer is that we as a species would take all the energy we put into war and greed and put it into peace and healing the planet.

This is the emergency you describe, Rosaliene. Each of us has the responsibility to address it. Casting a ballot is essential, but insufficient. Our personal choices regarding transportation, diet, recycling, and political action or inaction are all there in the mirror, for those who care enough to look.
