During the warmer and drier spring days, I was finally able to return to my weekend gardening activities. Our garden remains a source of joy and a refuge. With ongoing raids in our Latino communities across Los Angeles County and beyond, it has become clear that one’s legal status offers no protection from being randomly grabbed and disappeared. No criminal record; no problem. They fabricate one: resisting arrest, assaulting an officer. It’s a numbers game: a 3000-a-day quota. Now, I’m wary about going for my scheduled yearly blood and urine tests next month. You see, my medical clinic also serves our Latino and homeless communities.
During the time I spend with our plants, I forget this crazy world I now live in. They respond to my presence, my touch, and my voice. (Yes. I talk to the plants. 😊) They care not about the color of my skin or country of origin. My neighbor’s cat, Pumpkin, couldn’t care less, either. She loves to spend time with me while I’m gardening. At the request of blogger and cat lover, Rebecca Bud at Rebecca’s Reading Room, I’m sharing the photos below of Pumpkin.

The captioned photo shows part of the plot outside my sons’ adjacent apartment. I added a yellow daisy plant this spring. So far, they’re doing well. Here’s hoping they survive the extreme summer heat. The leaves on the bottom left of the captioned photo belong to another new arrival: an Abutilon ‘Tiger Eye’ plant. My son couldn’t resist bringing it home when he first saw it at a garden center in Santa Monica. Since it likes dappled sunlight or partial shade, I placed it under the outdoor stairs in front of my sons’ apartment. It seems happy in its new home. Judging from its drooping leaves, it gets thirsty every two days.
My favorite Aeonium ‘Lily Pad’ succulent produces a more colorful flower than the Aeonium Mint, as shown in the photos below.

Mother’s Day brought two new additions to my indoor garden—the polka-dot or bunny-ear cactus and the baby rubber plant (Peperomia obtusifolia ‘Variegata’)—to replace two cacti plants that had died. All my efforts to save them failed.

During a recent visit to San Francisco, my plant-loving son fell in love with the “rare” Adenia glauca, according to the salesperson, and the shape of the leaves of the small potted gingko biloba tree. After losing four of its original leaves, Adenia (as I call her) has produced new leaves and seems contented with its new home and smiling companion. I’m not hopeful about growing a potted gingko biloba indoors, however small. It appears to be dormant but has not yet lost any of its leaves.

Such is the nature of caring for diverse plants with differing needs for optimum growth. We humans are no different. In fact, we can be far more complicated living beings. When we are ready to put in the work of caring for each other, the benefits will brighten our days.

It’s so beautiful and lovely, and the frame is so sad. I’m still unable to wrap my head around what’s happening. It turns out that institutions that have developed over many centuries are giants with feet of clay. They can be upended, made worthless with a few strokes of the pen: abolish this and that, appoint such and so, fund and defund. We ended up with nought, even if things are restored under a next administration because their fundamental weakness has been laid bare. But, still, your quiet paradise is a paradise. Hang in there.

Dingenom, thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts 🙂 I’m also finding it hard to wrap my head around what’s happening. Wherever possible, we have to create our own quiet paradise to stay sane.

Lovely photos of your lovely garden, Rosaliene. Yes, we all need some kind of respite from the cruel wider world. As you allude to, if only more of our “leaders” would respect diversity; your diverse plants certainly have no problem living together.

Thanks very much, Dave. Could we humans even survive in a world without diversity? Envisioning such a world would make an interesting premise (or not) for a dystopian novel.

You definitely have a green thumb Rosaliene and who can blame you for getting lost in your plants during this topsy turvy administration. The whole thing is like Bizarro world and I keep waiting for someone to step up and stop it, but everyone seems to be complicit or frozen in place. I now see that Zombies are real. Have a pleasant Sunday dear friend. Allan

So glad you love my garden, Mara 🙂 Not all plants can survive in a region where there are years of drought and extreme summer temperatures. Now that summer is here, I have to be extra vigilant to water with greater frequency. I’ll tell her next time I see her 🙂

Thank you for sharing your beautiful gardens so full of diversity and arranged with an artistic eye. Plants and animals respond well to loving care and give us many moments of joy. I’m very sorry for the fear you face and the injustices happening in LA and around our country. I wonder what you can do to increase your security and safety and imagine things like carrying documents – things you should not have to do. I’m praying for your safety as I write this.

JoAnna, I appreciate your concern and prayers for my safety ❤ Yes, I have considered carrying a copy of my legal documentation. I haven't done so on realizing the risk of such information falling into the wrong hands. I work from home, so I can limit my exposure to potential threats. Blessings ❤

Speaking of talking to plants, Rose, did you know that trees talk to each other and can send communications across long distances? I’m going to tell one of my trees to tell one of your trees “hi.” ;0)

I read about that, Pam, but thought it was only between the same species 🙂 We’ve taken trees for granted and are paying the price 😦

It’s so cute that your feline neighbor comes to be with you as you garden. Cats (and other animals too) often know when we need comforting. Your post is a good reminder to not give up on enjoying life and beautiful nature despite what’s happening. (Don’t let the b*$t&7ds grind you down).

James, I didn’t know that about cats. Makes sense. I’m working at staying engaged and hopeful 🙂

The plants are lovely, but ooooh, how lucky you are to have a cat who comes and visits you. I love fluffy kitties, and that feline is the fluffiest! Pumpkin is a cute name for it too. Nice of your neighbors to “lend” their cat to keep you company while gardening.

Thanks very much, Zet Ar! I didn’t know that about the Bunny Ears Cactus. I can do well with a stress-reliever and mood-booster 🙂 There is something quite appealing about its rounded contours and polka-dots that immediately captured my attention at the garden center. Since it arrived in its new home on May 11th (Mother’s Day), it appears to be doing well: The “ear” on the extreme left is new growth.

What a wonderful gift to have a haven of peace in your garden and window sill Rosaliene! We need a shelter from the noise and that which is so disturbing as what’s happening in L.A.~!!!!
Love this plant. Not sure I’ve seen one that your son loves “Adenia glauca, according to the salesperson, and the shape of the leaves of the small potted gingko biloba tree.
Enjoy it! ❤️

It’s a wonderful gift, indeed, Cindy! My years of dedication have paid off 🙂
I’ve since learned that Adenia glauca is commonly known as ‘Elephant Foot’ because of its bulbous swollen base. My plant is still a baby. It’s a succulent plant that is native to southern Africa.

Rosaliene, this is so “zen” sis. I too find peace and tranquility when I am working outdoors with my flowers and banana trees, or even cleaning the leaves of my indoor plants. Your mind and spirit really does escape all of the noise and chaos trying to dominate our time when you garden, indoors or outside. 🥰🌳💐💖🙏🏼

Your garden is incredible! I am a very lazy gardener — I toss wildflower seeds into a left-over trampoline circle and call it a day 🙂 I have been getting tempted to try to grow something indoors again, so that will be going on my list for fall activities I think.
I live in an area where ICE has been active as well and my work involves many in targeted communities, so I empathize with your concerns. I am grateful we have these places of refuge with nature during this horrible time.

A beautiful post, Rosaliene. I admire those who have a green thumb! The ginko biloba tree is very striking. I believe ginko also has medicinal uses.
I hope you have found a way to get the health care you need. If not, maybe you could access telemedicine. My primary doctor offers it and insurance pays. You can find telemedicine on Amazon. You can order various tests and prescriptions online or get some tests over the counter at your drug store. Please take care of yourself! Be safe! Be well! ❤️

Thanks very much, Cheryl. The ginko biloba appears to be dormant.
I’m happy to report that all well went at the clinic. No masked raiders were in sight. But it was unusually quiet, with few people in the waiting area. Thanks for the info about telemedicine. I’ll check it out. You take care, too. I’m praying for your full recovery after your recent health emergency ❤
By the way, I'll be sharing your review in my Writer's Life blog post on Sunday, April 27th.
