Kate’s poetic reflections hit me exactly where I am at this moment when she writes: “Growth is suffering, growth is exposure, growth is moving towards the things which make us flinch, perhaps even terrify our hearts.”

Growth is not measured in the present moment It is always by looking back, seeing the difference Between there and here, that we are able to take a bearing Growth is not linear, it is not lateral It is perhaps more accurately, a series of curves that only a certain spatial awareness gained from standing…
The more relaxing thing —
Thank you Rosaliene, I’m deeply touched that you shared this poem.

That is a really beautiful photograph of the surfers. I didn’t realise just how big the wave was until I looked more closely and saw the people!

I cannot agree more, ‘growth’ is well-explained.

I think that personal growth has reached a strong point when we commonly think things through carefully so that the results of our decisions don’t blindside us.

Neil, that is for sure a great place to be, but getting there is paved with lots of hard falls.

Thank you for sharing Kate’s thoughts, and yours!.. Kate says it well about change as “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past and present are certain to miss the future.” (John F. Kennedy) and change can be scary, especially when confronted with challenges of which we have no control, and even though “There are things that we don’t want to happen but have to accept, things we don’t want to know but have to learn, people we can’t live without but have to let go.” (Nancy Stephan), filled with dreams and hope, our heart will go on…. 🙂
Kate’s poetry brings to mind a poem by Illahi Bedi….
Journey of Self Discovery…
What I am
Who I want to be
Am I just a stranger in this dinosaur world,
or is my existence limited to rest ,eat and pee.
Every day is a new day ,
I try to discover myself,
The identity crisis lulls over me,
In calm, yet monstrous glee,
Failing to find what exactly constitutes my being.
One day I want to be a doctor,
Other day an engineer,
Or even a scientist,
The society decides my ambition,
What career to pursue is guided by secure future norms,
They say I have a lunatics mind,
Persuade my mother to put some sense into me.
Enough is said,
I my setting on a journey of my own,
The mistakes I make shall be mine,
The regrets shall be my defined,
Its fall or rise,
Time will play a key role,
As Frost said,
I have an option of two paths ahead of me,
One pre decided by my ancestors,
less risky and challenging,
Other of my own,
I decide to take the less traveled one,
To mark on journey of my own.
(Illahi Bedi)
Until we meet again…
May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life’s passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!
(Irish Saying)

That’s so often true, Don, not only in our personal lives but also in our society.

I never considered growth as something not linear. But considering some recent setbacks, I can see growth more as a spiral. Your photograph makes me want to try surfing.

Evelyn, I’ve never considered growth in the way Kate has described it, much less linear or otherwise. Based on my own life experience, I would agree that growth as a spiral works perfectly in describing the setbacks we must endure and overcome before we can move on to the next level.
By the way, the photo was taken by Kate while “standing on the boardwalk watching board riders on a winters afternoon. The waves were perfectly well behaved, rolling as gently and on cue,as a well loved family pet.”
