Trump’s Shakedown Makes Washington Just Another Racket The impeachment inquiry into U.S. President Donald Trump has pulled my homeland, Ukraine, into the spotlight, and more Americans are talking about it than ever before. Yet few see it clearly. Some still call it — wrongly — “the Ukraine”, and few seem willing to spell the name of […]

Well said. We should have learned that the ‘the’ is superfluous by now. Incidentally it is the homeland of the wife of one of my son’s great friends.

Derrick, as you and your son already know, when we open our hearts and minds to peoples from other countries, we discover our shared humanity.

I recently discovered “Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin,” a 2010 history by Yale University’s Timothy Snyder: https://www.amazon.com/Bloodlands-Europe-Between-Hitler-Stalin/dp/0465002390/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1574606608&sr=1-1 Until reading this, I thought I knew a good deal about European History of the 20th century. I’m now convinced that the countries between today’s Germany and Russian can only be understood in terms of the actions against them and their civilians that began in the ’30s by Germany and the Soviet Union. Among those tragedies was the planned starvation of the Ukrainians by the Soviets. I encourage everyone who wants to understand the present rise of populism and nationalism, both in Europe and the US, to read this magnificent but troubling, well-researched, and challenging book.

Dr. Stein, thanks for the recommendation. I’ve added the book to my “To Read List.”
Until our US-Ukraine corruption scandal, I knew very little about Ukraine. To think that they once faced a “planned starvation … by the Soviets” is unimaginable. Now, our government is toying with their lives for personal political interests. What a heartless species we are! It’s amazing that we humans have survived this long.

The unimaginable became imaginable in the last century, and again in this one. And still you and I are surprised. When party officials held the power of life and death, no wonder corruption also grew as a response to the corrupt government.

Laleh, shame on us all as a self-serving species! Your latest short story blog post, “Leave the bone in,” reveals well this weakness in human nature.

I agree with you, we’re not united to change the world.

Thank you for sharing!.. it is sad that technology has given an element of world’s closed minded societies (not just the USA) a greater voice.. instead of using that technology to help all, it is used the benefit the few… the rest of the world needs to patiently use that technology to have their voices heard, and in time overcome… 🙂

So much going on we Americans don’t understand and many don’t care to understand. And I’m afraid we will all pay the price.

Mary, we’re already paying the price.

Sadly, a true story. I wish things were different. But I fear by the time we wake up to the realization, things would be too different and not for better.

The Ukraine scandal represents the mere “tip of an iceberg” as Trump destroys America’s international alliances with his “shakedown” policies.

Thanks for the link, Mary. That was an intriguing read… from a sort of kindred spirit also wandering this life questing for answers.

Thanks for sharing, Mary. It’s a beautiful reflection on the mysteries of Easter Island. The following excerpts resonate with me:
But never do I forget that we humans know nothing. And no one is in control.
We did not come into existence to be educated into submission. To be herded into a corral of listless uniformity. We are here to observe, to experience, to formulate our own realities. To enter the labyrinth of our spirit, get gloriously lost, find our way to the center of light and back again.

That excerpt is, well, confusing to me. First, how do we know why we come into existence? must we not give ourselves a reason? The reasons stated sound fine, on the surface, but also contradictory. Is our spirit (emphasis on spirit) in a labyrinthe? Is that not a contradiction if one knows what spirit is? Mind, I could go with, sure. The mind can get lost, but if it found its way to the center of light (and who can say what/where that is?) would it come back so un-enlightened? And if it did, then obviously there’s a serious problem with the Earthian mind. As a species ostensibly seeking enlightenment we seriously need to address our glaring individual and social problems. We will never achieve a beautiful future if we continue to feed on overt corruption. We would not eat rotten produce or meat, why are we so comfortable ingesting corrupt beliefs and eager to promote then and prolong their power over us and our world? Why can’t we slaughter the sacred cows of god, government and gold and give life back to our world, and our children? I wonder lately, how much is one Earthian baby’s life worth in terms of money to the average Earthian? Does the price vary if it’s a baby in Yemen or in my own home? Is it a question of “enlightenment” or common sense or compassion?
