These fears and frustrations [President Trump’s failure to build a wall], heightened by U.S. Census Bureau projections that white people will no longer be a majority by 2044, helped propel hate to a new high last year. The total number of hate groups rose to 1,020 in 2018, up about 7 percent from 2017. White nationalist groups alone surged by nearly 50 percent last year, growing from 100 chapters in 2017 to 148 in 2018. But at the same time, Trump has energized black nationalist hate groups — typically antisemitic and anti-LGBT organizations — with an increase to 264 from 233 in 2017. Overall, though, the great majority of hate groups are those that despise racial, ethnic or religious minorities and they, unlike black nationalist groups, have a firm foothold in the mainstream.

The top three states with the highest number of hate groups are California (83), Florida (75), and Texas (73).

So unfortunate, truly sad.❤️

Sadly, Laleh, our economic success has left millions of people behind. And they are justly angry. The power elite have led them to believe that the Other, in all its diverse forms, is responsible for their pain.

We really are quite immature in reality, so often anxiety and fear rules even when clearly implausible. Sad state of affairs.

So true, Paul. For that reason, the power elite stokes our anxieties and fears to maintain control and dominance.

it’s unfortunate. racism and casteism (in India) have been a major problem for the world since long and are so deeply entrenched in some people’s mind. As long as these people remain in power structures of our society, the evils of racist and casteism is not going to abate so easily. my prayers and wishes for the victims of such bigotry and hatred.

Thanks for dropping by and sharing your thoughts, Atul. Changing the power structures of our societies have been and continue to be one of the greatest struggles of the 99 Percent.

This very dangerous time we’re living in reminds me of 1850s America, and we all know how that turned out.

Dangerous time, indeed, Robert. Our species don’t seem to learn from our earlier mistakes.

Rosaliene,
Fueled by media focus. That hate-and-fear mongering is the reason I don’t have a television. I’d say the power elite control the media, but for that dastardly unregulated (so far) internet. People choose to watch that garbage. It’s an addiction.

Katharine, I don’t blame you for preserving your sanity. In order to stay abreast with what’s going on, I’ve subscribed to online news outlets–articles arrive daily in my email box–that I believe I can trust.

Rosaliene,
I read everything that comes across my bow and don’t believe all of any of it. I like to get a cross-section of different viewpoints but find nothing that completely captures my point of view, unless I write it myself. And often, I don’t even agree with that, but words are limiting and cumbersome, never precise enough to capture the essence of thought.

Katherine, we now live in an alternate reality where truth and fiction have become one. We even begin to doubt the evidence before our very eyes. Better to control our minds and keep us subservient.

Hate breeds more hate for sure in the U.S. . My latest blog
was a personal wake up call for sure about the problem. Thanks for reading it.

James, during your travels across the US, you’re no doubt seeing the visible disparities among our diverse communities.

Yes for sure. Today at fisherman’s wharf in San Francisco, for example, I watched destitute homeless people begging along sidewalks wall while a few feet away the “well off” crowd leisurely sat outdoors in expensive cafes to obliviously savor their meal. Also, McDonalds dining areas in several towns seem to be function as inviting respites for the homeless crowd.

The situation is no better in Los Angeles where I live. According to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, in 2018, approximately 50,000 to 60,000 persons may be found homeless on any given night in Los Angeles County.

It’s sad and a huge problem in the SF Bay Area where I live. The “well off” crowd most likely were tourists, they’re the likely ones to be spending money at Fishermen’s Wharf, a tourist area. Actually so much of SF is for tourists who gawk at the homeless while shopping. The wealth divide is shameful in the Bay Area. An average 1bdrm apt rents for $2000-3000+/month.

So sad to hear of this problem. Affordable housing would certainly help.

It is unfortunate that technology has given a voice to hate, “birds of like feather flock together” and a good deal of that hate learned without any real knowledge or reason usually passed on from one generation to another, especially in the world of religion… hopefully one day the generations that follow will overcome hate and the world will be at peace… 🙂

Asimov should have said “the most dangerous aspect” rather than “saddest.” On the other hand if “science” waited for society to gather wisdom it might as well join sleeping beauty and accept that the prince will never turn up, not even after a thousand years.

The graph shows a significant drop in 2014. I’m curious about that and also the states that have no hate groups according to the map.

Oh, I see there is only one state that has zero hate groups reported. It looked like there were a few until I hovered over them.

I hadn’t noticed that, JoAnna. Maybe there are no hate groups in New Mexico because of a more homogeneous population. According to the US Census Bureau, 82.2 percent of the state’s 2.1 million (July 2018 estimate) people are white.

I thought of that possibilit, too in looking at the other low hate group states. Diversity has its challenges, but if we can learn to appreciate and respect our differences, we can learn so much and become stronger, and wiser as a whole.

Hmmm. I wonder if it had anything to do with a certain president and people getting to appreciate him.

Thanks for this post Rosaliene. I looked quite closely at the map from the Southern Poverty Law Center, and this is stunning – the terrible range, even the names of most of these groups is so telling. Some quite obscure, others obvious and direct. Hear in Canada the yellow vest movement has taken hold. Yikes.

Terrible news. 😯 Destroying is always easier than creating, and hating easier than loving, at least for some. It’s a downward spiral as well, and hard to get out of.

Sarah, I see that the haters are also at work across the European Union. Hate is self-destructive. I was taught from a young age that good will always triumph over evil. What I’ve come to realize over time is that many good men and women have died and will continue to die in our endless struggle to contain the evil within us and among us. Yet, evil persists–as you put it, “hard to get out of”–steadfastly awaiting its time to rise again.

Sadly that is true, Brexit isn’t helping either to change the mood. It’s becoming an “every man for his own” kind of Union now – not at all what the founders had in mind. 😦

Sooner or later Sarah all “unions” are bound for disintegration. We are intelligent beings and capable of so much but remained blinded by concepts invented by those who exist only to control and exploit. All political unions are bogus enterprises run by parasites. The day Earthians realize that they are unique individuals and that their brains are designed for self empowerment is the day of freedom for the species. Brexit is the inevitable result of disenchantment with centralized control. When people vote to overthrow an existing system it’s because they are disenchanted by it. To support an oppressive centralized power unit against individuals is to put power before people and to insist that people need to be exploited, oppressed and otherwise abused by a bunch of parasites is to deny all and sundry their individual human rights to be free. The good news is, we don’t need government at all, the bad news is, we don’t know this because we are forever responding to the brainwashing.
