There has been a lot of analysis suggesting that the executive-level politics we’re seeing play out right now are about incompetence or irrationality. The psychology of the President himself has been called into question, with bizarre public performances and blatant falsities being propagated, mirroring that of others in the Administration.

Apart from the ethical problems with a trained professional diagnosing someone who he hasn’t personally evaluated, I doubt that such opinions add anything to the conversation. POTUS’s actions are best evaluated (in my opinion) in terms of their constitutionality, whether they represent our values, and whether they are in the interest not only of the nation but humanity at large.

Dr. Stein, thanks for your valued opinion as a psychotherapist with years of experience in the field. Some of his values are already having adverse affects on our immigrant population.

From the article:
“To reach the conclusion that this is the product of ineptitude or insanity, however, would also require us to conclude that the past two years of campaigning and governing have been equally accidental or the result of someone being unhinged (not to mention the years spent on television). A far more plausible conclusion is that this actually is being done by design, in the sense that the immediate goal itself is to stimulate chaos to induce fear in some and admiration in others. Indeed, Dr. Allen Frances (who helped write the DSM) cautioned against following this red herring: ‘Trump represents a political challenge to the American democracy. To attribute this to his psychological quirks is to underestimate the danger.'”
Agreed, what’s also implausible is the inference that the megalomaniac Trump is a witting accomplice to this diabolical agenda. The interests behind it initiated their master plan long ago (i.e. the 1971 Lewis Powell memo) and have simply created the circumstances in which a megalomaniac could rise to power. From a psychological point of view, Trump’s personality is definitively sociopathic; and, I would add, so too are those interests which enabled him.
Decades ago, psychiatry responded to criticisms of over-diagnosis by downgrading sociopathy from a condition of mental illness. I believe this was a terrible mistake, and the subsequent normalization of sociopathic behavior at the societal level is in large part responsible for America’s current state of demise.

Robert, I share your view that our new head of state and his enablers are sociopaths. How else could they destroy our environment; take the lives of innocent civilians in their endless wars; and put profits before people?

Of course there’s a program involved. One doesn’t need quotes from Mr. …”Indeed, Dr. Allen Frances (who helped write the DSM) cautioned against…” that being the same Dr. Frances, who talked to Wired’s Greenberg and said the following, quote: “There is no definition of a mental disorder. It’s bullshit. I mean, you just can’t define it.” after he’d co-authored the DSM or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
Still, ignoring this “interference” by another rank high-paid liar-for-hire drug pusher, the article is correct. I remember people saying the same things about G W Bush. There is always a plan. The “globalist agenda” is totally on-track and as it involves the deconstruction of America, they’ve given that job to bully heartless narcissist Dollar Trump.
As long as the same basic operating system remains in place, the rest must proceed along the same line it’s been on for hundreds of years, the only change being its exponential growth.

~ Sha’Tara, you express our harsh reality with your usual candor. California and other West Coast states are fighting back against the Trump agenda. There are even calls from some Californians for a ‘Calexit’ from the USA.

Good article – by design, not incompetence! Wow, how Machiavellian can it get.
You know Rosalienne, I’ve never been a fan of US policy, though I didn’t realize it could get worse…

Thanks for dropping by, Bruce. Your natural paradise in Western Canada is at risk if the Trump agenda gets underway.

Yes. Trump is cunning, not that stupid or mentally disorganized. But I agree with drgeraldstein. In terms of dealing with him, we can easily get lost in the gray areas of intention, cognitive ability, and mental health. His actions, on the other hand, are bonafide facts. Conflicts of interest or Constitution violations, for instance, are actions that can get him nailed. Not to say that the prosecution won’t need the utmost skill.

Rosaliene, Interesting article. Trump and team may succeed in destruction, but they would be tools used on an already rotten structure, not primary movers. Almost every president has used the office to expand executive power. People fear anarchy because they associate it with violence.
In the past, anarchy has led to consolidation of power under different rulers. What’s different about now is that individuals are informed enough to get directly and personally involved in the political process, maybe approaching a true democracy, as this thing plays out.
Trump has mobilized detractors and supporters in a powerful way, but no one can control or predict the outcome. Successful anarchy is peaceful, such as the women’s march. Movements like this inspire faith rather than fear and will hopefully keep the president within bounds.
By the way, the sign Aquarius in astrology is co-ruled by Saturn, planet of limitation, and Uranus, planet of sudden upsets. The Aquarian Age, which will last the next 2000 years, is supposed to be about the brotherhood of man, as well as finding order within chaos.

We have 2000 years to do it. Mythologically, chaos is the source of creativity. Man’s instinct to be creative can lead to some complicated situations.

These are indeed interesting times we are living in. There’s something big brewing, too. Something big brewing in 45’s administration that will be his undoing. I firmly believe that if you use evil tactics to get into power, those evil things will be your undoing. It’s happened throughout history…I just hope it doesn’t get so ugly that terrible things happen to people.

Cynthia, terrible things always happen to people, while the perpetrators go unpunished. Remember the US and global financial crisis of 2008?

True. True. I was more meaning the terrible things going on in Russia – dissenters disappear and then there were the desaparecidos in the 70s in Argentina – just to name a couple. Those kinds of things give me shivers. The 08 crash was awful enough…we in the Resistance need to use our wits, we need to stay sharp, and be relentless (but peaceful) in our approach to what’s going on right now – at least this is what I’m thinking. 🙂 Thank you for your awesome post!
