The chaos in the Middle East as a result of the West’s so-called War on Terror now threatens the stability of the European Union. Is this a deliberate plan of the “faceless world powers” or an unexpected development? Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban believes that the disintegration of Europe is their ultimate goal.

Hungary is not a place where one should be able, with a straight face, to allege the historical openness of its people to those of different ethnic and religious backgrounds. Viktor Orban appears to be one of a growing number of conspiracy-theorists, hoping to hide his xenophobia behind the cloak of protecting his country.

During this holy week of Easter, we should reflect on the lessons from the bible and other holy books to suppress our baser instinct to kill and maim. Every country in the world has some form of religion – Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Taoism, Shintoism, the Sun (Druids, Aztecs, Incas), etc. A lot of evil has been carried out in the name of religion but the intent of religion is never malicious, it was distorted by people to serve their own purposes – the crucifixion of Christ, the persecution of Christians in Rome, The Inquisition, The Crusades, the holocaust, the KKK, ISIS, Boko Haram, etc. I would like to quote Ecclesiastes 7.29 “This only have I found: God created mankind upright, but they have gone in search of many schemes.”

Thanks, Les. We have become so divided by our religious beliefs, I often wonder if we would ever be able to come together as one species. So much hangs in the balance for our survival.

Thank you for sharing Orban’s comments, Rosaliene. As I read through his concerns, I couldn’t help thinking about the suffering of indigenous peoples around the globe caused by European immigrants and colonizers. Sadly, most immigrants were only trying to escape from starvation and oppression themselves – to survive and find a safe place for their families – like the refugees flooding into Europe today.

The cycle of human migrations goes on, Carol. It’s only a matter of time before our turn comes around. When we, as peoples, forget our history, we lose our compassion.
My own native land, during its early British colonial history, welcomed Portuguese immigrants from the island of Madeira who were facing hunger and misery. My maternal grandmother was a descendant of Portuguese immigrants.
