Fifteen US States to Block EPA’s Clean Power Plan
On August 13, 2015, fifteen state attorneys general petitioned a federal court in Washington to block new U.S. rules to curb carbon emissions from power plants. States requesting the stay are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Insane. In particular, Florida – the Sunshine State.

I agree, JoAnn. The US is already not doing enough.
Yes, Florida’s state government is still in denial. Some coastal regions of Florida are already prone to flooding. This will only get worse with rising sea levels.

Interesting that Illinois and Pennsylvania, at least by looking at the map, appear to produce large amounts of carbon, but haven’t filed such a suit. Politics?

I don’t think it’s politics, Dr. Stein. While the governor of Pennsylvania is a Democrat, the governor of Illinois is a Republican. I think that several state governments are aware of the risks of climate change.
You can check out the Illinois state government’s “Climate Change Policy Initiative” dated May 28, 2015:

Pennsylvania has a Climate Change Advisory Committee. You can check it out at

Thanks, Rosaliene. The situation re: Governor Rauner of IL is well-known to me. He became Governor only recently in a strongly Democratic state where ignoring climate change would raise some notice. He is also married to a Democrat, although she certainly doesn’t appear to have had much influence on his attitude toward unions, etc. I am not familiar with Pennsylvania. Thanks for the links.

Thanks for that interesting bit about your governor, Dr. Stein. It just goes to show that the voice of the people in a state does make a difference.
By the way, in checking info requested by another reader,Cicorm, it appears that you are right when asking if the reason could be political.

At least on the other side, 15 states supporting the bill… The fifteen states against, are they mostly Republican or Democrat majority?

If the following map is correct, only two of the fifteen states are run by Democratic state governors: Kentucky and West Virginia. Seems like Dr. Stein may have a point.

At least as important as governor affiliation is how the state tends to vote (i.,e, how they voted in the last election) and the heavy majority of these generally conservative states are red states – that is, they vote Republican. Their action is not at all surprising, unfortunately.

Angela, it’s my hope that more and more people will demand and take action when they wake up to our new reality.
